The fundamental question raised time and time again in the continuing battle over the Law of Return is whether Israel will keep reinforcing the Orthodox monopoly over religious life of the Jews in the country or will it open up to religious pluralism as a basic tenet of any enlightened, liberal and democratic society. Had the Orthodox succeeded in the Knesset, the result would have been a reversal of the rela- tionship between Israel and the Is Western aliyah the answer to the Orthodox monopoly over religious life in Israel? Diaspora that in the long run would end in tragic consequences whose historic ramifications it is now too early to predict. The leadership of the Reform and Conservative movements in this country, and their represen- tatives in Israel who spearheaded the opposition to amend the Law of Return, ought to be commended for the forthright and courageous manner in which they resisted the attempts of the Orthodox minor- ity to impose its will on the major- ity through questionable par- liamentary coalition maneuvers. But the Knesset victory alone is not enough. What militates against Reform and Conservative Judaism in Israel today, is the small size of its organized follow- ing, which is no match against the broad-based highly motivated and well entrenched Orthodox camp. This situation could be changed if the Reform and Conservative organizations in the United States used their considerable re- sources and vast membership of over two million to launch a vig- orous aliyah effort. Perhaps a joint instrumentality of the two movements should be formed for this very purpose. Well planned and projected over the next decade, an Ameri- can aliyah movement under their leadership would in the end radi- cally change the complexion of Is- raeli society and break the Or- thodox monopoly over religious life in the Jewish state. Jewish Heritage Week Sought Michigan Congressman William Broomfield (R- Birmingham) is co-sponsoring a resolution currently up before the U.S. House of Representatives calling for the establishment of a Jewish Heritage Week. "The designation of such a week," according to Rep. Broom- field, "would serve to remind all of us of the variety in America's cul- ture and the contributions from many groups such as the Jewish community." 2750 HAGGERTY RD.
