THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEWS: 7 Carter Perceives Accords In Talks New York (JTA) — Former President Jimmy Carter said in an interview published in The New York Times Tuesday that he saw "three potential openings" in the accord reached in recent dis- cussions between King Hussein of Jordan and Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yassir Arafat. He described them, according to the Times, as "an acknowledge- ment that negotiations with Is- rael could be productive" and ac- ceptable, a "clear statement" that a confederation of Jordan and a Palestinian homeland might be acceptable and an indication that the Palestinians in principle ac- cept "all the UN resolutions which would include UN (Secu- rity Council) resolution 242." Furthermore, Carter said that Israel had to trade territory for peace and "delineate" acceptable, permanent boundaries. This can be done, the former President said, only "at the negotiating table where the consequences for Israel's security can be under- stood." In other comments pertaining to the Middle East peace process, Carter assailed the Reagan Ad- ministration for failure to apply "consistent and persistent efforts" to foster peace talks between Is- rael and its Arab neighbors. He said peace negotiations could be built on the "tremendous amount of common ground" in positions already held by Israel, some Arab governments and the Palestinians. Carter was in New York where he is promoting his new book The Blood of Abraham which outlines his views on the Mideast. Gur Criticizes Ariel Sharon Tel Aviv (JTA) — Health Minister Mordechai Gur has sharply criticized ministerial col- league Ariel Sharon for his at- tacks on Labor and opposition members for criticising his plan- ning and prosecution of the Leba- non war. Gur told newsmen Sharon should not be a Cabinet Minister. He said that the former Defense Minister had admitted the failure of the war in Lebanon, but this was not enough. Gur said the recommendation of the Kahane Commission that Sharon should not serve in the Cabinet should be implemented. "Sharon should pay the full price for his failure and for his in- volvement in planning the Lebanese War," Gur said. 1 Sincerest Best Wishes for A Happy Passover New Hours: 7 a.m.-10 p.m. 7 DAYS NKLIN SHOPPING CENTER 358-2353 N. of 12 Mlle 29221 NORTHWESTERN, WEEKLY SPECIALS 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. 16400 J.L.
