manuals which are so popular in
the West. One reason, according
to one of the assistants at the book
fair, is that the majority of people
in the Middle East have not lost
the skills which the West is striv-
ing so eagerly to recover. Another
reason given is connected with the
generation gap. Many of the older
Arabic-speaking housewives
cannot read, and even if they
could, would never admit there
was anything written in a book on
their household work that they
did not already know. The
younger women often combine
domesticity with a career.
Teachers, doctors, nurses and
bankers are glad to be freed from
kitchen chores. There is usually
some willing relative ready to
give a hand and affluent house-
holds are prepared to hire help.
Older artisans, too, resent any
suggestion that their skills are in-
complete. The system of appren-
ticeship and inherited crafts is
still prevalent. "A man may be
able to write a book, but that
doesn't mean he can tell me how to
knock a nail in." would be a com-
mon reaction to an offer of written
instruction, explains one of the
helpers at the long table.
They could hardly lift their
heads from giving change, wrap-
ping and packaging — the pres-
sure of business was so strong.
Prices range from 50 shekels for
paperbacks to many thousands for
beautifully bound works of schol-
arship that will last more than
one lifetime.
There are customers in all sec-
tions. Arab bibliophiles have this
in common with those of every
other nationality. Books, what-
ever they cost, are priceless.

Qaddafi Urges
Violent Means

Tripoli — Libyan leader
Muammar Qaddafi has called on a
group of Syrian, Iraqi and
Lebanese terrorists to use any
means possible, including suicide
attacks, in their effort to gain con-
trol in Middle East countries.
"There is no escape and no way
out but confrontation. That is to
say confront violence with vio-
lence," the Libyan leader told a
meeting of the National Com-
mand for Arab Revolutionary.
Forces this week. Qaddafi estab-
lished the Command earlier this
year with the stated goal of unit-
ing all Arab terror groups.
