But with volunteers and
contributions in shorter sup-
ply, Moies Chetim has had to
cut back. Twenty-two Detroit
area rabbis are listed on the
group's stationery as being
part of its rabbinical advisory
board, but Dorn admits that
many synagogues collect
funds before Passover and dis-
tribute it to needy members of
their own congregations or
send the funds to needy Jews
in Israel.
Cutting back has meant
that Moies Chetim has had to
use "the little cushion" it has
built up over the years. "Years
ago," Mrs. Katzman said, "we
used to deliver to the elderly
people. Now we try to get the
Jewish Family Service social
workers to deliver, or get
people to ask for rides from
their friends." Fayga Dombey
of JFS took 14 orders to inner-
city clients.
"These people are so proud,"
Mrs. Kaplan said. "We have
people who have been reci-
pients in the past who are now
donating small amounts." On
the other hand, Mrs. Katzman
said the organization has been
providing Passover necessities
to some families for three or
four generations.
The Moies Chetim veterans
recall that the Jewish Family

Service at one time gave an
annual $300 grant to the
organization. The stipend was
halted seven or eight years
ago. The group has also sent
two letters to the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, requesting
funds. They say they have re-
ceived no reply.
Sam Lerner, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Family
Service and the Resettlement

The arrangement
may not solve Moies
Chetim's immediate
worries . . . but it is
working.

Service, located across the
street from the Beth Tefilo
Emanuel Tikvah distribution
site, said JFS halted its
stipend to Moies Chetim be-
cause the organization raises c,
its own funds.
"We have a poverty program
of our own," Lerner said, "and
supplemental public assis-
tance." The JFS budget for
poverty programs is $110,000
this year. The agency spent
$127,000 in 1984, some
$20,000 over budget.
