Jason Isaac Biederman, son of
Michael and Sheri Biederman of
Farmington Hills, became bar
mitzvah at March 16 services at
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Jason twinned his bar mitzvah
with Leonid Gelfgat, son of Ar-
kady and Mina Gelfgat of Khar-
kov, Ukrainian, USSR.
The senior Gelfgat emigrated to
Israel in 1978, but his son, wife,
parents and sister have been de-
nied exit visas.
Jason planted trees for both
Leonid and himself in the Soviet
Jewry Freedom Grove at the main
Jewish Community Center last
September. He also has planted
trees in Israel in honor of their
b'nai mitzvah. The twinning was
especially meaningful for Jason
since his great-grandparents
came from Russia.
Jason led the Shachrit service,
read from the Torah and chanted
the Maftir and Haftorah. His sis-
ter, Lisa Naomi, reaad the Prayer
for the Country.
Proud grandparents are Rose
Berman of West Bloomfield and
David and Betty Biederman of
Southfield.

Ari Charlip
Twins Ceremony

Ari Charlip, son of Eliot and
Sheila Charlip, will be called to
the Torah Saturday at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
Ari will share his bar mitzvah
with Evgeny Pekar of Moscow.
Ari's ceremony dramatizes the
plight of Soviet Jews and allows
Evgeny to participate in the
ceremony in absentia.
Evgeny's father, YosefPekar, is
a radio engineer who applied to
leave the Soviet Union in 1978,
but was denied permission to
leave because of "state security."
