AMITAY Special to The Jewish News Israel's bipartisan support on Capitol Hill over the years has come from both sides of the aisle and from both ends of the political spectrum. But an unexpected let- ter to President Reagan initiated by a most unlikely source has many in Washington wondering whether this was a one-shot ef- fort, or that it might mean future support for Israel's retention of the so-called West Bank from the Far Right. Consider the following specific requests on the eve of the recent Mubarak visit to Washington di- rected to President Ronald Re- agan: "Seek assurances from President Mubarak that he honor his obligation to establish normal relations with Israel, and insist upon practical steps to implement this normalization. "Continue your commendable efforts to blunt Soviet expansion in the Middle East by vetoing Soviet participation in Middle East neogtiations. "Assure Israel that the United States will support continued Is- raeli control of the strategic areas necessary to its security, includ- ing Judea, Samaria, Golan and Gaza. "These steps will go further to bring peace to the Middle East than further territorial conces- sions, which would leave our Is- raeli ally vulnerable to aggres- sion." Senator Jesse Helms, Republi- can of North Carolina, authored the letter, which was co-signed by Republican Senators Steve Symms of Idaho; Mack Mattingly, Georgia; John East, North Carolina; Chic Hecht, Nevada; Al< D'Amato, New York; and Paula Hawkins, Florida; plus 11 conser- vative Republican House mem- bers and, curiously, one liberal Democrat (he went on, according to insiders, primarily because his office is situated next to the House initiator, Duncan Hunter!) Actually, both Senators Haw- kins and D'Amato did not have to sign a letter like this since their own pro-Israel credentials and re- cords are impeccable. But D'Amato, when asked, said, "Why not?" He stated he believed in what the letter said. What about the other signers? Hecht, who is Jewish, is not con- sidered a stalwart on Israel- 1, related issues and has kept one of the lowest profiles in the Senate in general. Symms, who narrowly WHEN IS IT MY TURN?
