Cager Loses
Citizenship

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Interior
Ministry has stripped American-
born basketball player John Lee
Irving of his Israeli citizenship,
claiming the Beta Tel Aviv star
used forged documents when
applying to become a citizen of the
Jewish state.
Ministry officials said that
upon his arrival in Israel, Irving
presented papers to show that he
had undergone official conversion
to Judaism, which entitled him to
automatic citizenship. Irving,
who is black, acknowledged last
week that he did not go through
any conversion ceremony. He
claimed that no formal conversion
was necessary as his grandmother
had been Jewish.
Irving said he did not know that
the document he had been given
to accompany his citizenship re-
quest was forged.
Irving was a standout player at
Hofstra University in Long Is-
land, N.Y. before turning profes-
sional in Israel.

Cemetery
Restoration

Bonn (JTA) — The town of
Neuwied in the Rhine Valley will
hire unemployed workers to re-
store the old Jewish cemetery.
They will be supervised by ex-
perts and Jewish representatives,
including rabbis.
The restored cemetery will be
incorporated into a public park as
a place for "meditation."
In Mayen, the local authorities
rejected an initiative by high
school students to restore a build-
ing that housed a Jewish school.
