Unfortunately, the loser in
all of this is the public which
receives a distorted view of the
Middle East and, of course, Is-
rael which again suffers in the
arena of public opinion.

The investigation into what
happened last week should be
undertaken without delay
with the results made public
as quickly as possible.._-_

Meanwhile, CBS and its col-
leagues might indulge in some
self-examination of their own
coverage of the Middle East.

Women Rabbis
Wrong Problem

I read the (March 15) article on
women entering the Conservative
rabbinate with great interest. It is
clear that Conservative Judaism
faces many serious issues, and
that ordination of women as rab-
bis surfaces some of them. How-
ever, the issues are not specific to
women, nor to women as Rabbis.
The primary issue facing Con-
servative Jews today is whether
they can continue to understand
Judaism as a religion of obliga-
tion, and not of right; of under-
standing, then discussion and
disagreement from knowledge,
not of disagreement without
knowledge; of change within a
context, and not change by popu-
lar vote.
For example, one of the women
rabbinical students objected to
wearing a tallit and tefillin be-
cause she saw it as a "male" thing,
as "androgynous." Her remarka-
ble statements should not be seen
as something which should limit
female participation in the rabbi-
nate. Rather, it should be seen as
a sign of someone who — if she
belongs in any seminary — does
not belong in the one she's in. If
she does not understand that all
Jews stand in a position of obliga-
tion relative to commandments,
then she can hardly be expected to
teach her congregation much of
Jewish value. All she can be ex-
pected to teach is that you do that
which you find acceptable in your
eyes, and not the Lord's.
All too many male Conserva-
tive Jews see the world the same
way, apparently — as a world of
right, not obligation, of con-
venience, not commandment.
Thus, the error was not in admit-
ting women to be Conservative
rabbis, The error would be to or-
dain this particular person as a
Conservative rabbi.
However, rather than facing

the tough issues, such as keeping
kosher being observant of holi-
days and festivals and Shabbat,
praying daily, and studying
Torah — things we are com-
manded to do — we worry about
whether women should be admit-
ted as rabbis — an office of fairly
recent invention in our faith.
Rather than understanding that
the issues are not sex-related, but
rather are related to fundamen-
tals of our faith, many will choose
sides as being "pro" or "anti"
women rabbis, rather than "pro"
observance.
And Judaism will be the loser.

Bad Headline
Connotation

As a single member of the
Jewish community, I strongly re-
sent the headline "Meat Market
Alternatives" for your singles ar-
ticle (March 22). I honestly feel
that the term "meat market" is a
terrible put-down for singles.
After carefully reading your ar-
ticle, I question what you mean by
this term. If, as I surmise, you are
referring to people looking for a
potential date-mate, then
wouldn't your alternatives be
"meat market" as well?
It is extremely difficult for
many single people to socialize,
and a sensational title such as this
can strike terror in many hearts.
Another fallacy of the article
was that it never referred to the
Connections' photographs, and
juxtaposed the names of the group
leaders.
As I have received many ad-
verse reactions to this article, I
certainly hope that your connota-
tion of "meat market" doeconot re-
lect upon Connections.

Indeed, some evidence
seems to suggest that not only
have the media been silent but
they appear to have suc-

ing favorable stories about the
PLO and other terrorist organ-

The barrage of media criti-
cism against Israel last week
is all too reminiscent of the
protests against occasional Is-

media cries foul when this
happens, they have not said a
word about the total inability

selected stories they are per-
mitted to print about the

WHY HE'S A CAMPAIGN PARTNER: "As a boy in
Vienna, I learned in the home how important it is to sustain
our heritage...I lost my father to the Holocaust, and I saw
my synagogue burned to the ground on Kristallnacht, so
you can see why the survival of the Jewish People and the
state of Israel is very important to me."
