AVERAGE SIZE 2nd $5.00 SYNAGOGUE Rabbi and Mrs. James Gordon Young Israel of Oak-Woods will hold a testimonial dinner on May 5 in honor of Rabbi and Mrs. James I. Gordon upon the occa- sion of their aliyah to Israel. Rabbi Gordon has served as the spiritual leader of Oak-Woods since his arrival in Detroit in the spring of 1963. The synagogue, founded in 1952, had been served by only one other rabbi prev- iously. Currently, Rabbi Gordon is vice president of the Council of Or- thodox Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, and is a member of the presidium of the Religious Zionists of Detroit-Mizrachi. He is one of the founders of Akiva He- brew Day School, and served as chairman of its education com- mittee for the first ten years of its existence. He is a member of the govern- ing board of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit, and serves on its commission on education and culture. He is also a past member of the National Rabbinic Advisory Council of the United Jewish Appeal, and is a former chairman of the Metropolitan Di- vision and a past chairman of the synagogue and school section of the Allied Jewish Campaign. He has also served on the executive committee of the Jewish Commu- nity Council of Metropolitan De- troit. Rabbi Gordon is a member of the executive of the Jewish Na- tional Fund. He is also a former national vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America; and is currently a regional vice president of the Rabbinic Alumni of Yeshiva University. He is a former national president of the American Association of Correc- tional Chaplains. He served as former editor of the Rabbinical Council of Ameri- ca's Sermon Manual, and is a con- tributor to many journals on Jewish thought. Rabbi Gordon attended Boston Latin School, and earned a B.A. degree from Yeshiva University. He was ordained by YU's Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Sem- inary. He holds a graduate degree in counseling from Oregon State College and an M.A. degree in psychology, with a certificate in marriage counseling, from the University of Detroit. Prior to his arrival in Detroit, Rabbi Gordon was the principal of the Providence Hebrew Day School in Rhode Island; served congregations in Portland, Ore., and Elmira, N.Y.; and was He- brew chaplain of the New York State Reformatory in Elmira. Mrs. Gordon, nee Malka Susskind of the Bronx, is a board member of the Women's Division of the Allied Jewish Campaign, and is a past chairman of the Campaign's business and profes- sional division. She is vice president - education of American Women for Bar-Ilan University. A graduate of Hunter College (New York City), Mrs. Gordon is a social worker and quality control auditor with the Michigan De- partment of Social Services. Orbach Family Concert Sunday "A Visit to Noah's Ark," an original presentation by Cantor Harold Orbach, is the theme of the second annual Keffy Orbach Fam- ily Concert 3 p.m. Sunday at Temple Israel. The free concert will feature Cantor Orbach, Evelyn Orbach, Richard Orbach, members of the Temple Israel youth group and the temple's Junior Choir, con- ducted by Elaine Greenberg and Scott Stern, accompanist. The concert memorializes Rakefet Orbach, grandchild of Cantor and Mrs. Orbach, who was killed in an accident three years ago in San Francisco.
