simply become their most
memorable joke.
If you read Inside, Outside as a
serious novel, you're in for big
trouble. Wouk has overwritten all
his life and admits to it. He has
never imposed any editorial disci-
pline on himself and because of
his successes his editors apparr
ently have allowed him his exces-
ses. In using continuous autobiog-
raphy, mildly varnished, as
straight fiction Wouk precludes
the possibility of his novel's hav-
ing any aesthetic distance, which
is to say that, lacking objectivity,
it wallows in subjectivity. This ac-
counts for an endless amount of
equivocating, advance an-
nouncements of what's about to
happen, asides to the reader and a
lot of folksy schmaltz we could do
without.
Another weakness evident in
this as in Wouk's other non-war
books is that he has never gotten
entirely beyond being a deriva-
tive writer. There are strong hints
here of the works of 'other writers,
particularly Good as Gold in
which Heller sends his faro-
tagonist to Washington during
the Nixon administration, with
Wouk now following suit. Some
minor phraseology and a scene or
two from Goodkind's early years
recalls Henry Roth's Call It Sleep
and Delmore Schwartz' "In
Dreams Begin Responsibilities."
Then there is that questionable,
though hilarious, characteriza-
tion of Peter Quat and another
characterization of the gag-man's
boss, a wildly reckless, foul-
mouthed wheeler and dealer
named Goldhandler whose pro-
fanities and obscenities are
legion. Though Goodkind says he
is "writing for the family trade"
and Wouk once solemnly vowed
there would be no smut in his
books, Inside, Outside gets dirtier
and dirtier. Wouk's guilt keeps
popping out. At this point it seems
at best a little hypocritical and at
worst a little boring. Wouk has
never known whether he wanted
to fish or cut bait so he does both.
My advice is to read his charm-
ingly overwritten book and enjoy
it. Just don't take the lovable old
gag-man too seriously. After all,
how many of us can entertain mil-
lions and make millions by in-
dulging ourselves, never even
having to decide between fishing
and cutting bait?

Nazi Trial Opens

Bonn (JTA) — Horst Czer-
winsky, a 62-year-old former SS
officer, has gone on trial in Luen-
burg for the murder of eight
Jewish inmates of the Lagischa
concentration camp, part of the
Auschwitz complex, in 1944.
The proceedings in the Lowe
Saxony court are expected to last
two years. The defendant's state
of health is such that he is able to
appear in court no more than six
hours a week. He has pleaded not
guilty, but 50 witnesses have al-
ready testified to judges who vis-
ited them in their respective
countries. Altogether, about 200
witnesses will be questioned,
many living in Israel, Canada, the
United States and Australia.
