Haifa — The bottom drawer,
where we drop odds, ends and
clippings, yields further evidence
that there is no place like Israel:
The postman in the United
States services an average of
1,171 persons; in German, 1,021;
Belgium, 800; France, 681; Great
Britain, 556; and Israel, 2,948.
This explains much.

A UNESCO report reveals that
in proportion to population, Israel
leads the world in the publication
of books and in the reading of
books. Last year, 4,380 books
were published, or 14 on each
working day of the year. A million
Israelis over the age of 14 read a
book a month, and a third of them
read a book a week. The voracious
reading habits of the adults are
matched by the children. About
90 percent of youngsters aged
nine - 13 read at least a book a
month outside of school.

Passover seders are held for all
soldiers in the Israel Defense
Forces, but soldiers on guard duty
or in front lines are ordered to
drink grape juice instead of wine.

Kibbutz Reshafim, left wing, of
Hashomer Hatzair, has entered
into an agreement with its
neighbor, the orthodox religious
kibbutz, Sheluchot. Members of
Reshafim will refrain from work-
ing their fields on Yom Kippur out
of respect for the religious sen-
sibilities of the neighbors, and
members of Sheluchot will refrain
from working on May 1, Israel's
Labor Day.

The anti-polygamy laws in Is-
rael are unfair to Arab men, it is
maintained. Whereas a Jew is le-
gally entitled to divorce his wife
according to religious law if she
has borne him no children in ten
years, such divorce is forbidden to
Arabs under Moslem law. The ban
on polygamy does not give the
Arab male another chance, a Mos-
lem lawyer claims.

Since kibbutzim introduced
various industrial lines in addi-
tion to agriculture in order to di-
versify the economic basis of the
settlements, new efforts have
gone even further afield. Kibbutz
Yifat authorized two of its mem-
bers to study law, and after
graduation they set up a law prac-
tice based on the kibbutz, serving
the entire region. All income goes
to the kibbutz, of course.

Israel's two chief rabbis have
ruled that those who violate traf-
fic laws are also violating
Halachah, Jewish religious law,
because traffic regulations are de-
signed to protect human lives.

An Arab from a village in the
Galilee applied for permission to
change his name from an Arabic .
one to a Jewish sounding name on
the grounds that his name handi-
capped him both in employment
and in his social life. His request
was turned down.
Ten years ago, the population of
Tel Aviv was 350,000. Today, it is
328,000 as the population has
moved into the surrounding sub-
urbs.
