FIRESTONE

D.O.E.

ter Administration. Eizenstat, in
New York last week, charged that
basic changes must be made in the
Israeli economy or the crisis
"could lead the country down the
road to virtual dependence on the
United States and a loss of control
over its own decisions."
Eizenstat makes his comments
in the new study, "Israel's Eco-
nomic Crisis: What Israel Must
Do," published by the American
Jewish Committee's Institute on
American-Jewish Israeli Rela-
tions, of which Eizenstat is
chairman.
Eizenstat lists proposals now
being studied by a joint team of
U.S. and Israeli economic experts,
including: real budget cuts of $2
billion, equivalent to ten percent
of Israel's total budget; additional
reductions in subsidies on a
variety of products to diminish
the artificial stimulus for con-
sumption; further devaluation of
the shekel in relation to the dol-
lar; continued wage restraint led
by the Histadrut; modifications in
indexation; and monetary reform.

Saudi Trip
For UN Head

United Nations (JTA) — Secre-
tary General Javier Perez de
Cuellar will pay an official visit to
Saudi Arabia next week, the first
of four Gulf-area countries he is
scheduled to visit. The other coun-
tries are Oman, Bahrain and
Qatar.
A UN.spokesman said Monday
that the visits were in response to
long-standing invitations of those
countries.
It is expected that de Cuellar
will discuss the Mideast situation
during his trip, but according to
diplomats, the Iran-Iraq war will
be the major topic of discussion.

Athlete Faces
Drug Charges

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Aulcie Perry,
one of Israel's most popular bas-
ketball stars, has been charged in
a Tel Aviv magistrate's Court
with possession and use of
dangerous drugs.
Perry is also scheduled to tes-
tify in the case of Yitzhak Kot-
lovsky of Bnei Rak, who has been
charged with supplying Perry
with seven doses of heroin on
three separate occasions in Feb-
ruary. Although Kotlovsky is
charged with buying heroin and
supplying it to friends free of
charge, the charges against Perry
mention sums of money paid.
Perry did not attend Sunday's
scheduled practice and has de-
clined to comment on the charges.
Maccabi Tel Aviv's management
also declined comment but noted
that Perry has not yet made
known his plans for next season.
The 31-year-old Perry, a black
American player, came to Israel
from the United States eighteen
years ago, converted to Judaism
and married a local fashion
model. He has been one of the
mainstays of the Israel and twice
European champion Maccabi Tel
Aviv team.
