A group led by Herut MK Meir Cohen-Avidov, a Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, engaged in a sh- outing and shoving match with members of the Painters and Sculptors Association, sponsors of the exhibit, and with police. Sev- eral paintings fell from the walls, or were torn down. Eye-witness accounts were not clear. There were some 60 paintings in all, by West Bank Arab and Israeli Jewish artists. The exhibit was banned by the military authorities on the West Bank. But the paintings have been displayed at private galleries in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv without incident. Cohen-Avidov protested that public and city funds were used to mount the paintings at a public gallery in Haifa. He took particu- lar exception to a painting by Is- raeli artist Harold Rubin entitled "Homage to Rabbi Kahane." It shows a Nazi-like bully with Jewish features raising his tefillin-wrapped arm in a Hitler salute. Rabbi Kahane, a Knesset member and leader of the ex- tremist Kach faction, vociferously ' advocated the expulsion of all Arabs from Israel and the ad- ?' ministered territories and punishment for Jews and Arabs who inter-marry. The Haifa Artists Association is divided over the showing. Many have complained that their gal- lery should not be used to display Palestinian propaganda. But others insist that to ban the ex- hibit would be to deny artists freedom of expression. "The ice floes in the Middle East are beginning to crack," the vete- ran diplomat told 360 guests attending a farewell dinner given in his honor by the Association of Americans and Canadians in Is- rael (AACI) at Kfar Hamaccabia. "The rumblings (of peace) in the distance scare some people, but it is the harbinger of summer," Lewis said. The American envoy, who began his tour of duty in 1977, the year of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem, said "the peace process has been the high point of my life." Reviewing his tenure as Am- bassador, he said his greatest satisfaction was to have partici- pated in the peace process be- tween Israel and Egypt and his greatest dismay was failing to prevent the war in Lebanon.
