THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday," March 22, 1985 •Th ROCKY'S PIZZERIA Rabbis Hear Falwell Apologize For Remarks Miami Beach (JTA) — Moral Majority leader Rev. Jerry Fal- well has apologized for calling for the Christianization of America. We were wrong and we are sorry," Rev. Falwell told more than 1,200 conservative rabbis attending the annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly last week in Miami Beach. "What • more can I say." Marc Tannenbaum, director of international relations for the American Jewish Committee, who shared the platform with Falwell, told reporters later that Falwell's apology appeared "sin- cere and the way has been cleared for the genuine dialogue between Conservative evangelical Chris- tians and the Jewish community." Tannenbaum told his conserva- tive rabbinical colleagues that "whatever our differences, the Jewish community does not take for granted that 70 million evangelical Christians have given stalwart support in the ad- vocacy and well being of the State of Israel." Tannenbaum described Jews as being "deeply troubled" during the 1984 Presidential elections by comments from both the Republi- can and Democratic parties. The AJCommittee leader said that President Reagan had 50-60 per- cent of the Jewish vote until Rev. Falwell, a key Reagan supporter, made his remarks regarding the Christianizing of America. "When you say you need to re- store America to being a Chris- , tian nation, to return to the condi- tions of our origins, that kind of mythologizing is nothing more than the revision of American. his- tory," Tannenbaum declared. Rev. Falwell, in his remarks praised Israel and spoke of his "love for Israel and the Jewish people." He promised to mobilize conservative Christians on behalf of the Jewish state and to fight anti-Semitism. Describing Israel as "America's only true friend" in the Middle East., the Moral Majority leader declared, "Were it not for the Is- raeli presence the Soviets would now own the oilfields in the Mid- dle East and we would not be here in an economy that is strong and flourishing. We (America) owe more to Israel than Israel owes to us .. . Every dollar we spend (in Israel) is the best defense dollar we spend anywhere in the world." In other action at the assembly last week, the rabbis voted for the first time to admit two women Re- form rabbis to the Conservative body. After rejecting the two candi- dates two years in a row, both of whom received Reform ordina- tion, the 85th annual meeting ac- cepted the applications of Rabbi Beverly Magidson, of Congrega- tion Beth Shalom, Clifton Park, N.Y. a Conservative synagogue, and Rabbi Jan Carol Kaufman of Rockville, Md., chaplain of a Jewish day school. The affirmative vote followed the passage of an amendment to admit upon ordination the graduating class of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York. A spokesperson for the RA said that the two women rabbis who were admitted to membership at the convention will not officially become members of the Conserva- tive rabbinic group until July 1. This means that Amy Eilberg, a JTS student who will be ordained before July, will officially become the first Conservative woman rabbi admitted to the RA. Meanwhile, Mikhail Gor- bachev, the new Soviet leader, was urged by RA delegates to engage in a new period of coopera- tion with the West by releasing Soviet Prisoners of Conscience, permitting increased Jewish emigration, and adhering to the Helsinki accords. The Conservative body urged President Reagan to include the issue of human rights for Soviet Jews as part of all dialogues held between the United States and the USSR, including talks on nu- clear arms and trade. Within the Likud bloc Tehiyah and Meir Kahane's Kach party scored gains, mainly at the ex- pense of Likud but also from some of the religious parties. Tehiyah captured six percent of the Jewish vote and Kach got three percent. The five percent who said that they had no preference, had voted Likud in the 1984 elections. Despite the swing to Labor, the Labor Party still does not have enough votes to form a govern- ment on its own without Arab support or votes from those who had no preference in last month's poll. But it could form a coalition with some of the parties now sup- porting the Likud Bloc. Labor leaders got good marks for job performance, all register- ing over 50 percent, while Likud Ministers fell below the 50 per- cent line. $725 Dinner Includes: Soup or Tossed Salad, Potato, Fresh Vegetable & French Bread / al of Southfield 25080 Southfield Road at 10 Mile 569-0882 Complete Greek and American Cuisine Lunch and Dinner Cocktail Lounge Now Appearing. The poll, by Hanoch and Rafi Smith, the father-and-son team of the Smith Research Centre, was taken in the last week of Feb- ruary, among a representative sample of 1,300 Jews. It showed .a three percent gain for Labor and an eight percent drop for Likud since last July's Knesset elections. The pollsters noted that in July 1984 the Likud block held a 52-47 percent lead over the Labor Bloc. In the Labor Bloc there was a realignment of support, with' no overall shift in voter preference. Shulamit Aloni's Citizens Rights Movement gained, as did Mapam, with the latter, appearing alone for the first time in a survey, gain- ing over two percent ofthe vote.
