Rally Follows
Zundel Verdict
Toronto (JTA) — The furor and
controversy that surrounded the
just-concluded eight-week trial of
Ernst Zundel, found guilty of de-
liberately publishing lies about
the Holocaust, has not subsided,
as evidenced by a huge rally this
month at the O'Keefe Center.
The rally, attended by some
5,000 persons, was to remind
Canadians of the realities of the
Holocaust. It included a call by
David Rotenberg, a Cabinet
member of the Ontario govern-
ment, urging that Zundel be de-
ported for his crimes.
Zundel was found guilty by a
12-person jury of publishing false
information likely to cause radi-
cal or social intolerance. He pub-
lished "Did Six Million Really
Die?" which claims the Holocaust
a hoax perpetrated by Zionists to
extort reparations from - West
Germany. He is still awaiting
sentencing.
Irving Abella, professor at York
University and author of "None Is
Too Many" received loud cheers
when he assailed the media for its
coverage of the Zundel trial. He
said the media "fell into_a trap by
emphasizing counter Holocaust
testimony and downplaying evi-
dence affirming it," despite the
anguish caused to Jews and sur-
vivors by the trial. He sail Jews
were thankful the Jury sent a
message that "there will be no
more free rides for hatemongers."
The rally was organized by the
Canadian Jewish Congress, B'nai
B'rith Canada and North Ameri-
can Jewish Students Network and
co-sponsored by more than a
dozen Christian Churches and
Labor groups.
Africa May Get
Israel Water Aid
Geneva (JTA) — Israel has of-
fered to share' with drought-
stricken African countries its
skills in making the maximum
use of limited water resources to
grow food.
"Israel feels duty-bound to
share the fruits of its experience
with African friends," David
Kimche, director general of the
Israel Foreign Ministry, told the
International conference on the
emergency Situation on Africa
last week.
"We do not have enormous
budgets," Kimche said. "But we
do have a great deal of experience
in growing food under difficult
conditions. We also have a large
reservoir of good will toward. the
people of Africa."
During the two-day United
Nations-sponsored conference,
Kimche met with Vice President
George Bush and with a half
dozen African leaders of countries
which do not have diplomatic re-
lations with Israel. He refused to
identify them.
One of the African leaders ap-
parently was not Ethiopian
Foreign Minister Goshu Wolde,
who told a press conference he
would not meet with the Israeli
official. Answering a question,
Wolde claimed that Ethiopian
Jews were taken to Israel against
their will and called for their re-
turn to Ethiopia.
