The journalistic cliche "Auschwitz Angel of Death" for the infamous Mengele is a 'literal" — and wrong — translation of Hebrew: Malachha-Mavet and Yiddish: Malekh ha-Mawves. Malach (Greek angelos) meant "emissary, messenger," either heavenly or hellish. When Yiddish-speaking survivors of the Hitler murder camps noted at war crimes trials after the war that they had referred to someone like Mengele as a Malekh ha-Mawves, their meaning, rooted in ancient usage, was "Murderer, Death- Messenger, Evil One, Death Per- sonified," etc. We live in a time when move- ments for the right and dignity of women, blacks and other groups have sensitized us to the existence of sexist and racist attitudes woven deep into the warp and woof of daily speech. Yet this same new sensitivity often fails to extend to under- standing that hearts can be wounded by a 40-year accumula- tion of cliches such as "Hitler's ex- termination (!) camps," "the ex- termination (!) of European Jewry," or "Mengele Angel of Death" — as a facile mistransla- tion ofche victims' own grim synonym for the ultimate in cruel, wicked murderers. However, let's not deprive jour- nalists of the chance to use some sort of catchy epithet the next time they write about Mengele. Linguistically and theologically sound translations are "Au- schwitz Doctor of Death" and "Dr. Mengele, the Grim Reaper of Au- schwitz." Bernard Mikofsky Bethlehem, Pa. `Shiksa' Condemned The article ("Confronting the Shiksa Myth") in the Feb. 8th issue left me angry and annoyed. The story was in poor taste. With so many important and interesting topics to write about, why select a subject which would be better put to rest? The term which your writer tries to explain and embellish is not helpful in good relationships between Jewish and non-Jewish families and friends. What did this story accomplish? Not a thing! .. .
