JEWISH WAR VETERANS

of USA, oldest veterans organiza-
tion in the nation . . . doing a fine
job helping our people and others
remember those Jewish men and
women ,wh‘o sacrificed their lives
and well-being for our country ..
recently bought new building in
Washington, D.C. . . . and is set-
ting up a museum memoralizing
Jewish war dead.
One of the first Detroit boys of
our faith to make supreme sac-
rifice in World War II was Marine
Capt. Ruben Iden . . . At Northern
High School and Detroit Institute
of Technology, he was an out-
standing athlete in football and as
a Golden Gloves boxer . . . Rube
joined the U.S. Marine Corps in
1939 as an enlisted man . . . to
further his education and become
a flyer . . . Surviving Pearl Har-
bor, he was killed during the
battle for Guadalcanal, Sept. 20,
1942 . . . His body washed up on a
small island (Renel) and was care-
fully buried . . . the grave tended
by natives until war ended .. .
Rube was then re-buried in
Hawaii's Punch Bowl Cemetery.
In the Memorial Home here, he
is suitably memorialized with a
portrait and page in the Golden
Book . . . Now Commander Al
Rose is spearheading a drive to
assemble mementos of Rube for
an exhibit in the Washington
Shrine . . . The Iden family has
donated his Marine sword, pic-
tures and a few letters . . . Anyone
in the community who has letters,
cards or clippings . . . any type of
remembrance of Marine Capt.
Ruben Iden . . . is urged to donate
them or allow the material for
copying so they may become part
of American Jewish history and
be preserved.
The items can be dropped off at
the JWV home, 16990 12 Mile, or
mailed there . . . Pickup can also
be arranged . . . For more infor-
mation, call Commander Al Rose,
557-5293, or the JWV office, 559-
5680.
CONGRATS . to Ida and
Louis Bregman . . . on their 65th
anniversary . . . 1920 was a leap
year so would be just 16th for
them . . . but Ida and Lou want the
wonderful 65.

DONATIONS OR CONTRI-
BUTIONS for the 30 Jewish in-

mates at Jackson State Prison to
have Passover seder . . . can be
sent to The Jewish Inmate Fund,
801 W. Michigan, Jackson, Mich.
49201.
As one of the inmates writes,
they do not have money for their
annual service . . . This includes
food that Rabbi Joshua Sperka,
Sammy Lieberman and others we
worked with through the years
always made certain the inmates
had.
Please don't let them down .. .
They are paying their debt to
society . . . and most will come out
better persons with confidence in
human kindness because of your
help.

MORT LEWIS WRITES .. .

from Margate, Fla. . . . "Hello
again from sunny-warm Florida.
It certainly was a very happy and
enjoyable First Birthday Party for
the Detroit Club. We had 80
people in attendance and a good
time was had by all. some of those
in attendance were: Hal and
Carole Smilack, Ralph and Alice
Lipshaw, Jerry and Delores
Friedman, Iry and Shirley Roth,
Mery and Roz Solomon, Edith T.
Gilbert, and snowbird Rosetta
Whitfield. I must mention that
Ralph and Alice Lipshaw and
Jerry and Delores Friedman be-
came grandparents — our Detroit
Club keeps growing. Our daugh-
ter, Shelly Winkler (the Pickle
Barrel Restaurant in Southfield)
is visiting us with daughter,
Rachel.
"Time certainly flies by. It was
just a year ago when we had our
initial meeting, then the beach
party in May, followed by the
cruise in October and then the De-
cember fantastic "Latkes In The
Park" and last but not least, our
birthday meetings. Now we are
all looking forward to our Mystery
Trip on March 30. Dress will be
casual, plenty of food and drink,
and, of course, dancing. For sure
we will also have adventure. Any
of those Detroiters that will be
down in Florida and wish to join
us, please do so. Guests are always
welcome. For further information
they can call: H. Emery, 305-
963-1150, R. Lipshaw, 305-386-
5859, M. Lewis, 305-972-4645.
"All best to you, Detroit!"
