In recent years, the authorities deposed the Arab mayors of Nab- lus, Hebron, Ramallah and El Bireh, because they were al- legedly involved in anti-Israei ac- tivities. Unable to find appropri- ate Arab personalities to replace the deposed mayors, the authorities appointed IDF officers 1 to function as acting mayors. So far the Jordanians have given no green light. According to Zach, they stipulated that their consent be returned by the ap- pointment of more Jordanian ap- proved mayors in other West Bank towns. Sources at the Defense Ministry said it has been Israel's policy to have Arab mayors run Arab cities, but there was no rush. However, they added that if Jor- 0 dan sticks to its failure to approve a Arab mayors, Israel may under- take a unilateral step and appoint mayors according to its own pref- § erences. E. of Evergreen) OP 8 Skin Shortage Affects Injured IDF Soldiers Tel Aviv (JTA) - A severe shortage in skin banks at major Israeli hospitals has forced doc- tors to seek graftable skin from Holland in order to treat the 14 Israel Defense Force (IDF) soldiers wounded in the March 10 suicide truck-bomb attack in south Lebanon. Twelve IDF soldiers were killed in the attack. According to doctors, the virtu- ally bankrupt skin banks are the result of the Orthodox-inspired anatomy and pathology laws passed by the Knesset last year. The laws, which have been rigidly enforced, bar the removal of or- gans or skin from a deceased per- son unless permission was given prior to death or consent is ob- tained from relatives of the de- ceased. Many Israelis volunteered to donate skin when the shortage became known. But the doctors said the soldiers' burns were too large to be co ered by skin from living donors. v NY Archive New York (JTA) - The New York Holocaust Commission was presented Friday with its first major acquisition, 140 crates and footlockers full of historic docu- ments from the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunals. The documents, presented to the commission from the New York State Library, are one of 23 original mimeographed sets of Nuremberg transcripts.
