Butler has petitioned the Board
of Rabbis to convene a Beth Din
(rabbinical court) to judge the
case. It is highly unlikely that
the Federation would agree to
take part in such a hearing.
Israel Today, which publishes
a large local weekly and enjoys
a small national circulation as a
daily, has not taken a stand in
the controversy.
In line with American news-
paper tradition, the rivalry bet-
ween the Jewish papers is
grounded more in the person-
alities of the owners and
economic competition than
ideological or political
differences.
All the papers declare them-
selves unbiased and open to all
viewpoints, but in practice some
differences in attitude and
editorial preference are ap-
parent.
The Bulletin is still mainly a
house organ for the Federation
professionals and wealthy con-
tributors who run its affairs.
Israel Today shows no distinc-
tive viewpoint. TheMessenger
increasingly reflects the Or-
thodox outlook and Heritage
tends to be hawkish on Israel
and progressive on communal
social problems.
Yehuda Lev's The Jewish
Newspaper is likely to find its
prime audience among a small
but influential segment that
sides with the doves on the
Israeli scene and the liberals on
domestic issues.
He started the paper with
$85,000 obtained from 20 in-
vestors and he admits that his
paper will have to catch on pret-
ty fast and raise another
$100,000 in the next six months
if it is to survive. He has taken
pains, and a considerable part of
his resources, to publish a dis-
tinctive inaugural issue that
runs to 12 full-size pages (in con-
trast to his competitors' tabloid
format) printed on superior
stock.
The first issue included two
articles from The Economist,
one commenting on a Jewish
Chronicle interview with Chief
Rabbi Sir Immanuel Jakobo-
vitz, and the second on the
decline of the kibbutz move-
ment. From Israel, Daniel
Gavron of the Jerusalem Post
reported on the country's
economy and politics, while Kin-
nereth Shiriyon, a Reform rab-
bi living in Tel Aviv, sent a
feature on the integration of
English-speaking immigrants.

Although he has been a fre-
quent critic of the Federation
Council and of the Jewish
media, he says he will try to live
in peace with his competitors,
especially the well-financed
Bulletin.
