I believe the Reform, Con- servative and Orthodox rabbis are going to have to come to a concise opinion on "Who is a Jew" and it will have to be based on the Torah. It can no longer be left to the individual ▪ rabbis to decide. There are too many mixed marriages out there now, too many children Women Rabbis Secular Outgrowth? In reference to your articles on women rabbis (March 15) — I would like to point out that the push for women rabbis is clearly an outgrowth of the secular women's movement which func- tions under three basic premises: 1) that greater significance is attached to those activities which are done in public and which at- 772-9495 • FRONT DISC BRAKES' $59.95 with coupon Regular $69.95 Semi-Metallic pads extra :f11104 S. Woodward, Birmingham tract public recognition, 2) that an act is significant to the degree that one is paid for it, and 3) that intellectual work is intrinsically superior to physical work. Judaism catagorically rejects all three attitudes. Anyone wishing to enlighten themselves on this subject would find a treasury of information in a paperback book called Jewish Woman in Jewish Law by Moshe Meiselman (available at the local Jewish bookstores). There are also many classes throughout the community whose goal is to enlighten Jewish women about their "precious legacy." Mrs. A. Karbal Humor Applauded I enjoyed the humor by NOrma Weitz Zager ("Love At First Byte," Feb. 15). It was refreshing after the tasteless article carried the week before comparing Jewish women to shiksas. I would like to see more humor in The Jewish News. It coincided perfectly with Valentine's Day. Thank you for bringing a smile that day. Judith Greenberg Cleveland And `Precious Legacy' "Cleveland" did not reject the Precious Legacy exhibit as Heidi Press's article March 8 indicates; rather, Sherman Lee, director of the Cleveland Museum of Art re- jected it as "folkloric." Clevelan- ders themselves have flocked to see the exhibit in Washington, Miami and New York. Now — by the busload — they are heading for Detroit. The Cleveland Jewish News has given extensive coverage to "The Precious Legacy." I personally attended the exhibit's opening in Washington and interviewed its coordinator Mark Talisman, of whom Cleveland is very proud. An exhibit of Mark Talisman's photos of Prague together with drawings from Terezin which did get to Cleveland last year was ex- tremely well attended. It also states: "If Reagan had not em- braced Falwell's vision of 'Chris- tian America,' the Jewish vote would have divided more evenly." The article relates the Demo- cratic Party with Anti-Semitism. Without rehashing the whole con- troversy, I believe that the Rever- end Louis Farrakhan was an un- fortunate aberration who linked himself to the Democratic Party. He was repudiated by Walter Mondale and Jesse Jackson, too. Mr. Siegman states at one point > that Jesse Jackson is at the center of black leadership. Later he says that "the black community is too well endowed with qualified polit- ical leaders who do not trade in bigotry and racial politics." Many Jewish leaders including some in the American Jewish Congress have stated that we must form co- alitions with these black leaders. They will not find them in the Re- publican Party. The Democratic Party does not have to piously reassert its oppo- sition to anti-Semitism. It is part and parcel of the traditional Democratic dedication to civil liberties and the rights of minorities. . . . Jews have supported the Demo- cratic Party because its philos- ophy comes closest to fulfilling our vision of a society free of pov- erty and homelessness which will lead the world towards brother- hood and peace, and they will con- tinue to do so. 772-4350 who don't quite know where they belong. I have made my personal de- cision and have asked to be .converted according to the To- rah. It was a very difficult de- cision to make, since I really don't know what my mother would have wanted me to do. Now - my children have to make that same decision. It is not easy when no one is sure of what, where, when, who and why you are what you are. Friday, March 22, 1985 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS - PV:1 n.
