New York (JTA) — El Al Israel
Airlines and Israel's Ministry of
Tourism are undertaking a joint
advertising campaign this year,
hoping to greatly increase the
number of American tourists to
Israel.
Moshe Shoshani, Israel Com-
missioner for tourism in North
America, and David Schneider,
General manager of El Al in
North America, - said the aim of
the joint campaign is to increase
the number of American tourists
to Israel this year to half a mil-
lion, compared with 405,000 in
1984.
They said that the new cam-
paign will have a budget of $1.2
million.

Sand of the Citizens Rights Party,
one of the foremost and most con-
sistent opponents of the Lebanon
war since its outset, is currently
serving on reserve duty in south
Lebanon at his own request.
A reserve officer, Sand is ac-
companying convoys of men and
material along the roads the
south Lebanon. "I believe Knesset
members should see and suffer
the hell at close quarters," he said.
After last week's suicide-car-
bomb attack which killed 12 Is-
raeli soldiers, Sand was among
those wha called for an immediate
and total withdrawal from Leba-
non.

Monge Honored
San Jose, Costa Rica (JTA) --
Luis Alberto Monge, the
president of Costa Rica, was pre-
sented with the 1985 Human
Rights Award of the World Jewish
Congress' Latin American branch
at the National Theater there. He
was the 19th recipient of the
award, presented annually since
1966 for distinuished service to
the struggle for human rights.
Monge, in his • acceptance
speech to an audience of Cabinet
ministers, members of parliament
and the judiciary, the diplomatic
corps, prominent intellectuals
and Jewish leaders from Costa
Rica and abroad, asserted that his
defense of human rights was a
duty, synonymous with his coun-
try's traditions and, history.

States rose by more than 9,300 in
fiscal 1984, to 121,908.
The Algemeiner Journal re-
ported a jump of 4,589, going from
90,483 to 95,072; the Forward
went from 18,150 to 23,326; and
the Morning Freiheit declined
from 3,940 to 3,510.
