(Schocken); fiction, A.B.
Yehoshua, for A Late Divorce
(Doubleday); and history, David
S. Wyman, for The Abandonment
of the Jews: America and the
Holocaust 1941-1945 (Pantheon).
Also, in the religious thought
category, Samuel Heilman, for
The Gate Behind the_Wall: A Pil-
grimage to Jerusalem (Summit);
Translation, Raymond Rosenthal,
for his translation of The Periodic
Table; and special citation,
Roman Vishniac, for his collection
of photographs, A Vanished
World (Farrar, Straus and
Giroux).
