The compromise was sharply attacked by local Jewish and non-Jewish groups, including members of the coalition. Helmut Leonardy, chairman of the West German Association of Judges, called it a "bad compromise" likely to worsen rather than im- prove the present situation. Heinz Galinski, head of the West Berlin Jewish community, said the compromise failed to take into account the unique character of the Third Reich's annihilation policy against Jews. He also said that the bickering among the var- ious parties over so grave a matter seriously damaged West Ger- many's image. "As a former in- mate of Auschwitz I feel myself offended by this continuous quar- rel," Galinsky said. SNORING 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 1985 • Richard E. The coalition parties agreed to empower state prosecutors to initiate legal action against persons who propagate the insult. Until now, proceedings of this kind were possible only when initiated by the victims. Judge Leonardy said it would be "practically impossible" to prove that persons who deny the Holocaust thereby insulted indi- vidual Jews. IRA AND CLAIRE ZAIDMAN INTERCONGREGATIONAL EVENING • • • • • • • • • The most offensive feature of the compromise legislation is that it equates the Holocaust with the crimes of "terror regimes" against Germans during and after World War II. Persons who claim for example that millions of Germans were not expelled from the eastern regions of Germany after the war would be subject to the same penalties as those who allege the Holocaust was a hoax. wish to express their feelings of gratitude and apprecia- tion to the members of the community at large who have demonstrated their genorosity and devotion to K'lal Yis- rael by their involvement in the Mitzvah of G'miloot Chasadim.
