CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK

I used to teach- a- Bible course
entitled: "The most popular book
in the Bible." When the course
was concluded, the students were
asked to list the books in order of
popularity. The least popular was
the book of Leviticus, which we
began reading this sabbath.
Some students went so far as to
say that it should not even be read
in the synagogue; that its em-
phasis on animal sacrifices is
completely outmoded; that they
are embarrassed that their ances-
tors resorted to such a barbaric
form of worship.
Perhaps some of their criticisms
were correct. The ceremony may
have been archaic. But its signifi-
cance is as relevant today as when
it was first practiced. What these
critics failed to take into account,
is the lesson that the sacrificial
cult intended to teach.
Visualize, for a moment, the
ancient farmer. He has worked
long and hard to achieve a har-
vest. All this belongs to him! But
then he remembers what his reli-
gion has taught him: that some-
where, there is an altar, waiting
for his sacrifice; that part of what
he has, he must share with others.
Any fundraiser for the Allied
Jewish Campaign, can tell you
that there are far too many people
even today, who have not yet mas-
tered that lesson of sharing, of an
obligation to other human beings.
Judaism, virtually from the
very beginning, understood that
every person is preoccupied with
his own wants, with his own
needs, with his own desires. The
great sage Hillel said, "If I am not
for myself, who will be for me?"
But he doesn't stop there! He went
on to say: "But If I am only for
myself, what am I?"
This preoccupation with self, is
normal with little children. A
young child's constant refrain is:

Troy Congregation
Is Recognized

The ceremonies recognizing the
Troy Jewish Congregation's
membership in the Reform
movement will be held at 7:45
p.m. Sabbath services today (cor-
rect date) at the Lutheran Church
of the Master, 3333 Coolidge,
Troy.
Rabbi David S. Hachen,
regional rabbi of the Northeast
Lakes Council of the Union of
American\Hebrew Congregations
will present the Troy Jewish Con-
gregation with a plaque recogniz-
ing its new status. During serv-
ices he will talk on "An Offering
Unto the Lord."
An Oneg Shabbat will follow
services.

Synagogue
Services

-The congregations listing
has been scheduled to resume
on a weekly basis, beginning
with the April 5 (Passover) is-
sue.

"Give me! It's mine!" To that little
child, the whole world exists to
serve him, including his parents.
But then, the child grows up, and
the parents grow old. The roles
are reversed. The child becomes
the parent, and begins to protect
his aged parents.
The book of Leviticus, with its
sacrificial cult, is not too popular

these days for obvious reasons.
We live in an age when the do-
minant refrain is: "You owe it to
yourself?" Well, the Torah thinks-
otherwise. The Torah teaches that
you owe something to others. Isn't
it interesting that the Hebrew
word for sacrifice is korban (to
draw near). What a remarkable
insight that gives us into life.
The selfish life, alienates us
from people. The sacrificial life
involves us with people.
