Tel Aviv (JTA) — Officials of
Voice of America Radio will come
to Israel at the end of March to
begin discussions on the technical
aspects of a powerful transmitter
the United States wants to erect
in Israel to boost its broadcasts to
the Soviet Union.
Maariv reported last week that
the American technicians had
hoped to come earlier but were
asked by the Israelis to postpone
their visit. The paper said Israeli
officials stressed the delay was
not due to any desire to postpone
the negotiations for political rea-
sons but simply to allow more
time for internal discussions of
the project.
According to Maariv, the
transmitters will be used to relay
VOA broadcasts to the Soviet
Asiatic republics whose proximity
to Israel relative to their distance
from Western Europe would help
overcome Soviet jamming.

Economy 'Solved'
In Purim Prank

Jerusalem (JTA) — Purim was
marked last week by an "April
Fool"-like prank by the Army
Radio station, creating mammoth
traffic jams in Tel Aviv where a
carnival and some 5,000 runners
from Israel and 15 other countries
had gathered for a local version of
the Boston and New York
marathons.
The Army Radio — Galei
Tzahal — stole the show with a
straight-faced report that an
American multi-millionaire who
died left his $5 billion fortune to
the State of Israel, solving in one
massive cash infusion, Israel's
economic crisis.
