BACKSTREET RESTAU-
RANT & Lounge in Hillcrest

Banquet & Convention Center on
Groesbeck has top 40 sounds
I every Tuesday -through Saturday
. March 12-April 27 is Two-
' Twenty Group.

FULL NAME OF THAT
,FINE waitress at Pickle Barrel

(Deli, 12 and Evergreen, who took
salad to Blanche Brasch at Sinai
Hospital is Diane Donnay .. .
She's the day head waitress who
started at Pickle Barrel nine
years ago as a setup girl putting
silverware on tables instead of
waiting on them . . . Evening head
waitress, Chris Lancaster, has
been there since it opened in 1975
. . . She was a Sam Boesky favo-
rite at the former Darby's on
Seven Mile and Wyoming.
IF YOU'RE A fan of the late
Duke Ellington, like brother
Mary Raskin among others, you'll
be glad about that tribute to
Duke, Sophisticated Ladies, com-
, ing Fisher Theater way, April
2-28 . . . The show sings and
swings with Duke Ellington's in-
s comparable music . . . stylish flair
is generously wrapped in beauti-
ful costume and inspired choreog-
raphy.
Son.gs like Take The eA' Train,
Sophisticated Lady, Mood indigo,
It Don't Mean A Thing, among
others that kept toes tapping for
five decades, are being directed by
Duke's son, Mercer Ellington.
NUMBER SIX in Buddy's
Pizza growing chain opens soon on
> Highland Road near M-59 in
Waterford . . It'll seat about 200
. . . plus cocktail lounge . . . A big
favorite will be the glasse in area
overlooking beautiful surround-
ings.
OWNERS OF THAT very
,popular Hammerheads Restau-
rant in Monterey, Calif., are
former Southfield gents Erwin
Horvith and Julian Lefkowitz.
Thanks to David and Doris
Goodman for sending me a minia-
ture menu . . . Some of the goodies
served at Hammerheads aren't
Mound at too many places . . . and it
really appears to be what the
menu says, "A Gastronomic Ex-
perience."
SIXTH BIRTHDAY is being
celebrated by Diamond Jim

Brady's of Southfield in Town
Center . . . Civic Center Drive and
Evergreen.
NEXT BIG fashion show by
Leah Marks will be May 16 . . . at
Knollwood Country Club, 12 noon
. . . with Sidney Krandall Jewel-
ers, Adaria in Birmingham with
its ultra designer women's
clothes, and Leotard's Etcetera.
ROMAN TERRACE, Orchard
Lake Rd. at 12 Mile, is celebrating
it's 12th anniversary . . . while
downstairs at McFrock's is brith-
day number four . . . Festivities at
both places are going on this
Thursday thru Sunday.

THE MYSTERY MUNCHER
WRITES . . . "The road to losing

weight is paved with good inten-
tions but dining out can be rough
going. Those hot rolls, mounds of
butter, cream sauces and gorge-
ous desserts are tempting . . . But
a good waitperson will see to it
that your seafood is sauteed in-
stead of fried and guide you
through the meal with as few
calories as possible.
"Order your salad dressing on
the side so your greens won't be
doused in creamy garlic. Oil and
vinegar is boring but a little
lemon and mustard can do won-
ders.
"Seafood restaurants are prob-
ably your best bet. Chinese food
without corn starch may be a tad
dry but a little soy sauce will liven
it up.
"The Rams Horn on 12 Mile
near Northwestern offers skim
milk, low fat cottage cheese,
water-packed tuna fish, a variety
of fish cooked to your order and a
weight watchers menu. Frozen
low fat desserts are tasty.
"Chuck Muer's empire of sea-
food restaurants is just what the
doctor ordered. Whole lobsters or
crab legs steamed in water, fresh
fish boiled without oil, butter or
margarine, fresh chilled shrimp
and oyster are great spritzed with
lemon for moisture.
"The chi chi Restaurant Dug-
- lass of Southfield Road serves
grilled fish unadorned with sauce
as the popular chefs concession to
the diet conscious.
"Sila Pizzeria, on 12 Mile east of
Greenfield, has a great antipasto
salad in three sizes. The small one
is more than you can eat unless
you're famished.
"Pure 'n Simple, on Rochester
Road in Troy, offers an alterna-
tive way of eating with whole-
some, imaginative vegetarian
cuisine.
"Friar Tuck's in a number of lo-
cations features menus and des-
serts for dieters who want 'legal
lo-cal goodies.' The Village Place
also has a low-cal menu and
Weight Watchers frosted treats."
STEVE ALLEN was recently
selected as one of six team mem-
bers from across the United States
to represent the American Culi-
nary Federation (ACF) at "Taste
of Canada," a national competi-
tion for apprentice chefs . . . 120
students from around the world
were chosen . . . He is a registered
apprentice chef in the ACF . .
and works under Master Chef
Milos Cihelka at Golden Mush-
room, Ten Mile and Southfield.
Chosen for his excellent work
