Settlers Unhurt
In Hebron Blast

Jerusalem (JTA) — A family of
Jewish settlers in the West Bank
escaped injury last week when
their car triggered a roadside
bomb in the Hebron area. The de-
vice was similar to those em-
ployed against the Israel Defense
Force (IDF) in south Lebanon but
the incident was the first of its
kind in the West Bank.
Security forces found a leaflet
near the site of the explosion
signed by the Democratic Front
for the Liberation of Palestine, a
terrorist organization led by
Nayef Hawatmeh. The bomb was
allegedly planted in reprisal for
the forced closure of Arab shops in
Hebron by the Israeli authorities.
The incident occurred at about
midnight when a family of four
was returning from a Purim party
to their home in Moshav Beit
Hagai in the southern Hebron
hills. The car apparently tripped a
wire that touched off an explosive
charge.

J

New York — Yiddish theater
producer and actor David Carey
died March 10 at age 41.
'
He was a co-founder of the
Shalom Yiddish Musical Theater
in 1978.

Rehovot, Israel — Binoculars
with enhanced perception of
depth — a boon for sports
enthusiastics and outdoorsmen
alike — have been designed by
Prof. Izchak Steinberg of the
Weizmann Institute of Science.
Although ordinarily studying
fluorescence in biological
molecules, Prof. Steinberg, dean
of the institute's faculty of
chemistry, has long been in-
terested in optical devices, some of
which he utilizes in his day-to-day
research. He realized that poor
three-dimensional appreciation of
scenes viewed through binoculars
stems from the traditional design
of these instruments, a pair of
precisely parallel monocular tele-
scopes.
"If you just modify binoculars to
include the possibility of optimiz-
ing the angle between the tele-
scopes for the object or scene
under observation, the three-
dimensional effect enhances."
