Bard spoke softly of his views
recently, referring to notes he
had prepared for the inter-
view. "We desperately need to
work out the role of women in
religious Jewish life, but
women as women, not women
as men," he said.
Bard noted that he respects
his female colleagues. "On the
left and right sides of their
brains, they are powerful
people," some of the
"brightest" students in the
rabbinical program, he said.
". . . I question what they are
doing, but I love studying with
them."

There is one telling example
of how the Seminary has tried
to find a way for the old and
new to co-exist in this year of
change. For the first time, the
institution offers two sets of of-
ficial daily prayer services.
The "downstairs" service, in
the first floor chapel, allows

only men to form part of the
minyan. The "upstairs" serv-
ice, in the floor second library
reading room, accepts women.
At first, recalled Cantor, the
rabbinical candidates joked
about the conducting of two
services, referring to them as
"minyan A" and "minyan B."
But as the faculty and stu-
dents settled into the aca-

demic year, they began to ac-
cept the separate services as
part of campus life. Carolyn
Braun, a 27-year-old Welles-
ley graduate who oversees the
running of the egalitarian
service, said she welcomes the
two sessions. "That's the point
of Conservative Judaism, that
there can be niany different
opinions," she said. ❑

The dean of the rabbinical
school of the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary, Rabbi Gordon
Tucker, says Mrs. Marion
Shulevitz is the only person
with Detroit roots among the

trained in hazzanut as can-
tors.

Rabbi Beverly Weintraub
Magidson, a former Detroiter
who studied at the Reform
seminary, Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, currently is the
rabbi of Cong. Beth Shalom in
Clifton Park, N.Y. She is the
congregation's first full-time
rabbi.
Upon accepting the post, she
said she faced almost no oppo-
