Attached women faced
different problems. Boyfriends
and husbands who did not
share their partners' religious
zeal resented the amount of
time the women were sud-
denly spending in prayer or
the strictness with which they
observed the Sabbath.
One matter that the group
discussed could bring a smile
to the face of any woman who
has tried to maintain a home
and career at the same time.
"The house is going to wrack
and ruin and you are studying
for your Talmud exam!" Can-
tor paraphrased husbands as
saying.
Although a co-ed rabbinical
program has become a fact of
campus life at JTS, the admis-
sion of women has failed to end
the debate over whether a
female clergy is acceptable
under Jewish law. Cardin em-
phasized that what she de-
scribed as the "rancor" of the
arguments that preceded
female admission has sub-
sided. And, like all of the
women interviewed for this
article, she noted that what-
ever their beliefs, faculty
members have yet to allow
hostility toward female ordi-
nation to interfere with teach-
ing. "The professors I have are
absolute gentlemen in the
class," she said. "They are first
and foremost teachers who
want to impart Judaism."
Still, the politeness does not
mean the people have changed
their minds. Rabbi Dov Zlot-
nick, a professor of rabbinic
literature, and incidentally,
father of five females, among
them a student pursuing a
doctorate in Talmud, is one of
the faculty members who re-
mains opposed to the co-ed
program. He does not mince
his words. "I don't think a
woman should be a rabbi," he
said, calling the notion that
they should be "silly."
Zlotnick maintained that
female ordination represents
> "anti-nomism," violation of
moral law, and pointed out
that the 1983 vote to admit
women was made by the fa-
culty as a whole, rather than
being confined to Talmudic
scholars. He compared the bal-
lot to "physicians sitting down
and talking to maintenance
people about whether there
should be surgery in a certain
situation." The rabbi said he
fears female ordination will

blur the distinctions between
Reform and Conservative
Judaism, and could lead to a
rift in the more traditional
movement.
