unlike others of their gender,
who are exempt 'from certain
"time-bound" duties such as
praying three times a day and
wearing tallit and tefillin, the
female rabbinical candidates
must carry out the same reli-
gious obligations as men.
Some of the women object,
finding the wearing of tefillin
especially emotionally
wrenching. Lori Forman, 25,
considers the prayer shawl
and phylacteries "traditional
male ritual symbols,"and re-
jects the notion that to be a
rabbi a woman must adopt the
customs and duties of men.
"Women as rabbis is whole
new endeavor," she
she said.
"They should be allowed to de-
velop their own voice in
Judaism."
But seminary members
such as Rabbi Joel Roth, a pro-
fessor of Talmud who supports
female ordination, believe
that without assuming obliga-
tions like wearing tefillin,
women would be violating the
L_ legal basis for their admission
into the Jewish clergy. Roth, a
former Detroiter, maintains
that Jewish law requires a
leader in prayer to have
"equality of obligation" with
his or her worshippers.
In response, Forman said
this
argument smacks of: "You
>
can join us in this profession as
long as you look like us and
become men." She noted she
wants equal access to leader-
ship positions in the religion
without "androgyny."
Equality of obligation raises
more philosophical questions.
Nina Beth Cardin juggles rab-
binical classes with running a
household in Teaneck, New
Jersey, one that includes a
husband and two small chil-
dren. A third baby is on the
way. Cardin said it is tough
finding time for both regular
prayer and raising children.
"There has to be some under-
standing of the changing role
of the parent," she com-
mented.
One religious question that
women rabbinical students
will probably not encounter on
a regular basis until they are
ordained is a current topic of
discussion: Whether a woman,
rabbi or not, may serve as a
witness to a marriage or a di-
vorce.
The significance of the ques-
tion is one of the many issues
that opponents of female ordi-
nation put forward in justify-
ing their stand, because the
Talmud states explicitly that a
woman may not be a witness.
Some rabbis discount this pro-
