making its mark on the map of
Israel not only through its con-
gregations, youth movement,
kibbutz and rabbinical seminary.
Conservative rabbis and
educators who made aliyah from
America have also inspired the
.creation of a new type of elemen-
tary school that attempts to over-
come the religious polarization
that has plagued Israel's school
system. Previously, Israeli
schoolchildren could be divided
into two groups: one which was
taught that Orthodoxy is the only
legitimate form of Judaism, and
the other which was taught virtu-
ally nothing of Judaism in any
form.
The new school, know as TALI
(a Hebrew acronym for Enhanced
Jewish Studies), attempts to
teach Judaism as a living religion
in a liberal, non-coercive
environment, combined with a
full program of general studies.

Parallel to the growth of the
Mesorati movement, the Conser-
vative movement expanded its
involvement in Israel by estab-
lishing a cultural center and office
in Jerusalem, greatly expanding
the number of young people visit-
ing or studying in Israel each year
under the auspices of United
Synagogue Youth or Camp

Ramah, and in creating an organ-
ization of Conservative Zionists
called Mercaz. All of these de-
velopments have entailed close
cooperation with the World
Zionist Organization (WZO),
which several years ago endorsed
the principle that all religious
movements in Judaism, including
the Conservative and Reform
movements, should have equal
rights and status in WZO activi-
ties.
There has been a dawning
awareness within the leading
ranks of the Conservative move-
ment that its own future in North
America depends in part on ex-
panding and intensifying its ties
with Israel across the board, in-
cluding the active promotion of
aliyah. Conservative-sponsored
tours of Israel return to the
United States inspired by the ac-
complishments of "their" olim.
Also, it would have been im-
possible to set up Kibbutz Hana-
ton without the financial support
and political backing of powerful
agencies in Israel: the Jewish .
Agency, the Jewish National
Fund, the United Kibbutz Move-
ment and even the Israel Defense
Force, which created a special
unit for Mesorati youth combin-
ing military training with work
on the kibbutz.

For fashion impact with all the features of a digital:
stopwatch, alarm, hourly time signal and dual time zones, look to
the black and gilt design on the left. For elegance with uncommon
authority, look to the chiseled stainless design on the right.
Edged in gold-tone, distinguished by shading of steel
grey with black. Unique. For the newest, most forward-
thinking watches of our time, look to Seiko.
