Golan Heights
Site Of Druze
Demonstrations

Jerusalem (JTA) — The third
anniversary of Israel's formal an-
nexation of the Golan Heights last
week was marked by Druze pro-
test demonstrations on both sides
of the Israel-Syria border.
Druze on the Israeli side raised
Syrian flags and observed a gen-
eral strike last Thursday. Shops,
businesses and schools were
closed and only a few Druze
showed up for work in Israel. The
police did not intervene.
The protest coincided with
statements in Washington that
the final status of the Golan
Heights should be determined in
negotiations between Israel and
Syria. The statements were not
welcomed by Israeli leaders. The
Prime Minister's Office issued its
own statement, affirming that the
Golan Heights are an integral
part of Israel.
Minister of Commerce and In-
dustry Ariel Sharon, who visited
the Heights last week, said he
would urge the government to es-
tablish more settlements there to
dispel all doubts as to Israel's sov-
ereignty. He also said he would
demand that the government un-
freeze allocations to Golan set-
tlements and give them prefer-
ence in government aid.

New York (JTA) — Israel has
provided the United States with
$50 billion worth of technological
data from captured Soviet mili-
tary equipment, it was disclosed
last week by Meir Rosenne, Is-
rael's Ambassador to the United
States.
Addressing a meeting of the
American Friends of Tel Aviv
University, the Israeli envoy said
that Israel had saved America
"many years of research and bil-
lions of dollars" by sharing with
the United States the planes,
tanks, missiles and other Soviet
military equipment captured
from Arab armies. He said the $50
billion price-tag was an estimate
based on a study by two American
generals in the Pentagon.
"U.S.-Israeli strategy coopera-
tion is a two-way street, bringing
benefits to both sides," he said. He
voiced Israel's "continued opposi-
tion" to the proposed American
sale of sophisticated military
equipment to Arab nations that
refuse to come to the peace table
with Israel. Such sales — "now
they call them transfers of
technology" — jeopardize Israel's
security, he said, adding, "We
don't want to replenish our arse-
nal with American equipment
captured from the Arabs who at-
tack us."

Washington — Spurred by the
near-cessation of Jewish emigra-

arrests and harrassment of Jews
by the Soviet government, B'nai
B'rith International is calling on
its members around the world for
the third straight year to stage
events on March 15 designed to
