Call The Jewish News

Racism And The Rabbinate

For The Jewish News to accuse
the Israeli Chief Rabbinate of ra-
cism because of their decision re-
garding the conversion of Ethio-
pian Jews reaches the height of
disrespect.
Had the editorial staff of this
paper bothered at all to investi-
gate the statements of the
Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel
and those of Rabbi Moshe Feins-
tein, the leading Halachic
authority of our times?
Even a superficial reading of
the response on this issue would
indicate that —
1) Our rabbis have been aware
of the existence of this tribe many
centuries before "Professor Jac-
ques Faitlovitch discovered them
more than 60 years ago."

2) Nobody has any "doubt re-
garding the loyalty of these
people." In fact Rabbi Moshe
Feinstein speaks in glowing
terms of their self-sacrifice and
their need to rescue them from
their situation in Ethiopia.
3) The requirement for conver-
sion (as stated by Rabbi Feinstein
and the chief Rabbi of Israel)
arises as the result of the techni-
cal intricacies of Jewish law and
has nothing to do with the color of
anyone's skin.
When laymen criticize experts
who are dealing with issues be-
yond their scope, they are display-
ing appalling lack of sensitivity
and professionalism.

Directory For Survivors

I was one of over a thousand
people who participated in the In-
gathering for Holocaust Sur-
vivors at the Tel Aviv Hilton on
Jan. 27 marking 40 years after
liberation. One of the most force-
ful messages that was transmit-
ted in both word and deed is the
fact that for many survivors, the
nightmare of those horrible years
continues to the .present day.
Thousands of survivors
gathered with one primary goal,
searching for hints and clues
about the possible survival of
loved ones. Many participants
had pinned to their clothes their
names and from what city they
were from and requests for infor-
mation regarding their relatives.

It is because of this human
tragedy that the Holocaust Edu-
cation Center in Jerusalem re-
cently established a computerized
directory of Holocaust survivors,
the first comprehensive collection
of its kind in the world. It will help
survivors track down their mis-
sing loved ones, and will hopefully
reunite families which have suf-
fered from the curse of uncer-
tainty.

Survivors or their families
should contact us in Jerusalem so
that we can send them the ques-
tionnaire form.

100 Rabbis Arrested
At Soviet Jewry Rally

New York (JTA) — More than
200 demonstrators, including 100
rabbis, were arrested Tuesday in
front of the Soviet Mission to the
United Nations on Manhattan's
East Side.
The arrests were made after the
demonstrators tried to approach
the front entrance of the Mission
following a 1% hour rally on be-
half of Soviet Jews.
Rally sponsors said the demon-
stration coincided with the arri-
val in Washington of a high-level
Soviet delegation. Rabbi Av-
raham Weiss of the Student
Struggle for Soviet Jewry said,
