Pictured at the Shapero School of Nursing's final graduation
ceremonies are, from left: Rabbi Richard Hertz, Edna Adastik and
Irving Shapiro, Sinai's executive vice president.

A long chapter in Sinai Hospi-
tal of Detroit's history came to a
close last month as the last class of
Sinai's Shapero School of Nursing
received diplomas.
The hospital-based school,
which opened in 1956 with fund-
ing from the Nate S. and Ruth B.
Shapero Foundation and the
Cunningham Drug Co. Founda-
tion, was the first in Michigan for
licensed practical nursing. All
told, 2,406 students have
graduated from the school since it
opened.
The graduation ceremony was
held in the Handelman Hall of
Temple Beth El in Birmingham.
Dr. Richard Hertz, rabbi emeritus
for the temple, presented the in-
vocation for the ceremony, and

Sylvia Serwin, president of the
Shapero School of Nursing board
of trustees, presented the opening
remarks.----
Edna Adastik has been the di-
rector of the Shapero School for 13
years and on the faculty since the
school opened.
The Shapero name will live on,
however, when the Shapero Insti-
tute for Nursing Excellence opens
later in the year as an extension of
the Hospital's Department of
Nursing.
The institute's objective, ac-
cording to the new director, Sister
Marcella Clancey, will be to pro-
mote research and higher educa-
tion as related to innovative con-
cepts and practices in nursing.
