Bavaria Leader
Vows Inquiry
On Mengele
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Bavarian
Premier Franz-Josef Strauss told
a press conference in Tel Aviv last
week that he intends to investi-
gate reports that Auschwitz death
camp Dr. Josef Mengele owns a
factory in the Bavarian town of
Guensburg. The plant is allegedly
operated by Mengele's family
with profits deposited in a Swiss
bank account.
Strauss said he had never heard
of the factory or its alleged owner-
ship before reporters had ques-
tioned him about it.
The West German political
leader, was received cooly by
many Israelis on his visit at the
invitation of Prime Minister Shi-
mon Peres because of a statement
attributed to him supporting the
sale of West German Leopard
tanks to Saudi Arabia. Strauss
stressed that there was at present
not a single German tank in Saudi
Arabia, while the Americans, the
British and the French sold mil-
lions of dollars worth of tanks and
other military supplies to the
Saudis and other Arab states.
Strauss said that his attitude
towards the Nazis and the
Holocaust was no different from
that of Israel's. "Anyone who tries
to deny the significance of the
Holocaust or its existence is either
mentally deranged, or a political
criminal, or both," he said.

Biased Remark
By Priests Hit
New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai •
B'rith (ADL) has protested the
false accusation by two Nicara-
guan Catholic priests that the
Jews crucified Jesus.
Rabbi Ronald B. Sobel, chair-
man of ADL's Intergroup Rela-
tions Committee, wrote to the two
clergymen — Bishop Miguel
Obando y Bravo of the Archdio-
cese of Managua and Rev. Miguel
D'Escoto, Nicaragua's Minister of
Foreign Affairs — in criticism of
their use of what he called an an-
cient, "inaccurate and inflam-
matory" canard which was re-
pudiated and condemned by the
Nostra Aetate Delcaration at the
Vatican Council II in 1965.
