Israel's Housing
' Density Declines

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's hous-
ing situation has improved in re-
cent years, according to the 1983
population and housing census,
details of which are now being
published.
The Central Bureau of Statis-
tics disclosed last week that
among the Jewish population, the
housing density averaged 1.1 per-
sons per room in 1983, compared
to an average density of 1.4 per
room in the previous census of
1972.
Among non-Jews, the density
dropped from 2.8 per room to 2 per
room.
The bureau spokesman said the
density decline was the result of
an increase in the average
number of rooms per residential
apartment — from 2.5 rooms per
apartment in 1972 to three in
1983 among Jews and from 2.2
rooms to 2.7 among non-Jews,
combined with a decrease in aver-
age family size from 3.6 per family
to 3.2 among Jews and from 6.2 to
5.5 persons per average family
among non-Jews.

Poland Returns
Jewish Bodies

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The bodies of
10 Jewish Palestinian volunteers
who fought in the British Army in
Europe during World War II will
be brought to Israel from Poland
for re-burial. The soldiers were
presumably killed after being
taken prisoner by the Germans.
According to the Israeli news
agency Itim, only one of the
graves has been positively iden-
tified — that of Israel Abba Zas-
sler, whose sister Hannah
Houseman spent the last 40 years
trying to learn the whereabouts of
his remains.
Zassler was captured by the
Germans while serving in a
British Army communications
unit near Athens, Greece in April
1941. He was taken to a prison
camp in Upper Silesia where he
was forced to work as a miner. In
1943, he was shot by a German
guard and buried in the camp
grounds.
