Rabbis Debate
Conversion Of
Ethiopian Jews

Jerusalem (JTA) — The con-
troversy over whether the
thousands of Ethiopian Jews who
recently immigrated to Israel
must undergo Lehumra
a form
of conversion ritual — was
heightened over the weekend
when Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi
Avraham Shapiro sharply
criticized two former Chief Rabbis
for maintaining it was not re-
quired.
Chief Rabbi Shapiro said in an
interview published in the reli-
gious daily Hatzofe that he could
not understand why former Chief
Rabbis Shlomo Goren
(Ashkenazic) and Ovadia Yosef
(Sephardic) have reversed what
he claimed was their own long-
standing positions on the issue.
According to Rabbi Shapiro the
conversion requirement for
Ethiopian Jews was upheld by all
past Chief Rabbis of Israel and is
the universal view of Torah schol-
ars abroad.
Rabbis Goren and Yosef, in
separate public statements, have
disagreed with a recent ruling by
the ten-man Chief Rabbinate
Council which has caused anger
and distress among the Ethiopian
emigres. The council, meeting
under the chairmanship of Rabbi
Shapiro and Sephardic Chief
Rabbi Mordechai Eliahu, held
that the newly arrived Ethiopian
Jews must undergo ritual immer-
sion and swear a formal undertak-
ing to observe halachah — reli-
gious law.
The council agreed that the
males need not undergo bloodlet-
ting, symbolic of circumcision, in-
asmuch as all Ethiopian Jews
have been circumcized. Rabbis
Goren and Yosef, citing rabbinic
sages of the past, declared that the
Ethiopians are fully Jewish and
require no conversion, symbolic or
otherwise.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — While gov-
ernment officials haggle over
where to make further budget
cuts and the general population is
asked to bear some hardships as
Israel tries to wrestle its economic
problems under control, there re-
mains one group of individuals
who appear to be doing little of
their own belt tightening — Is-
rael's professional basketball
players.
Salaries of Israeli basketball
stars, while below those of their
NBA counterparts in the United
States, nonetheless have soared.
In the National Basketball
League, Maccabi Tel Aviv is lead-
ing the field with Hapoel Tel Aviv
in second. Both clubs feature Is-
rael's best basketball players.
According to sources here, Mac-
cabi's operating budget for the
year is $1 million while Hapoel's
operating cost is half that. The
players' salaries are reported to
make up about half the operating
budget.
Maccabi, according to reliable
sources, is paying its two most re-
cent acquisitions from the United
States — Lee Johnson and Kevin
McGee — a total of $220,000.
