and geographic tournaments."
And, "We raise funds for
organizations both here in De-
troit and out of the city, but
also related to B'nai B'rith. My
league now, through the In-
ternational organization, is
raising money to support a na-
tional B'nai B'rith softball
team which is going to play in
the Maccabiah Games this
summer. We've been running
raffles and drawings to raise
money. All our organizations
are doing the same. We're try-
ing to raise $10,000 from all
the groups to support this
team."
Klinger was born and raised
in Detroit and graduated from
Mumford High School — "the
second graduating class, in
1954." Mrs. Klinger was born
in Toronto, moved to Detroit
when she was five, and is a
graduate of Central High
School. They have lived in
Southfield for five years after
17 years in Livonia.
"I started bowling when I
was 18," Mark says, with B'nai
B'rith Young Adults. "We
were bowling at Great Lakes
Recreation, down on Wood-
ward Avenue. I got involved
with these people because I
had just become president of
the B'nai B'rith Young Adult
Council. At that time, B'nai
B'rith had a gap between 18
and 21. If you were in some of
the younger B'nai B'rith
organizations . . . your term
there was over when you were
18. At that time you couldn't
be a member of B'nai B'rith or
B'nai B'rith Women until you
were 21 . . .
"I had gone into the service
in 1959. When I came out in
1962 I got real active with
B'nai B'rith bowling. I first
joined Tucker-Grant B'nai
B'rith Bowling League."
Fran says she didn't bowl
when her husband was in the
army, but that he bowled in
three leagues, including an
otherwise all-black league in
Louisville, Ky. while he was
stationed at Fort Knox.
"That was when there was
still a racial problem in the
South," Mark recalls. "I was
working at Ireland Army Hos-
pital . . . and met a gentleman
by the name of Ray Carter . . . I
met him in the department
where I worked preparing tis-
sue for microscopic study and
where I was also an autopsy
assistant."
Carter invited Klinger to
bowl in his league.
"I was in the 190s and part of
the league beat me consis-
tently," Klinger says. "It was
