different than when they went
in," he said.
His other notable experi-
ence involved his children,
Rafi, 9, and Jessica, 11. They
have been involved in the
project from the first. "They
have known Prague as if it was
part of their neighborhood,"
Talisman said.
He and his wife took their
children to Prague where he
met Irma Lauscher, a teacher
at Terezin and former secre-
tary to the late Leo Baeck. It
was Lauscher who tried to
provide a semblance of nor-
malcy for the death camp chil-
dren. Of the 15,000 children
who entered Terezin, only 94
survived. More than 77,000
Czech Jews died in the
Holocaust. Today, there are an
estimated 15,000.
Talisman recalled that Mrs.
Lauscher was given a tree
seedling, smuggled in the boot
of a Czech guard, while in the
camp in 1943. She gathered
the children to celebrate the
planting of the tree about the
time of Tu B'Shevat. The tree
was planted in the ashes next
to the Terezin crematorium.
Each group of children coming
through the camp nurtured
the tree, which today is 60 feet
high with a 30-foot spread. At
the base is a brass plaque
which bears the inscription,
"As the branches of this tree,
so the branches of our people."
Mrs. Lauscher insisted that
Talisman take his children to
the tree, particularly Jessica.
He had misgivings. "It is a
tough decision for a parent to
make," he said, but ultimately
he relented. Accompanied by
Mrs. Lauscher, the group vis-
ited the tree and Mrs.
Lauscher gave Jessica a poem
to read, translated into
English. As Jessica read the
poem, Talisman said, Mrs.
Lauscher's eyes were "red-
rimmed," but she was beam-
ing. When Jessica finished
reading the poem, Mrs.
Lauscher said it had been
written by an 11-year-old Jes-
sica 40 years before. "I knew
that poem would be read
again," Mrs. Lauscher said.
For Talisman it was a stun-
ning experience. "It shows we
have survived, but for what?
To do what? The choices are
ours. We are a people of hope."
According to the compilers
of The Precious Legacy
catalogue, there are many
reasons why the Nazis chose
Prague as the repository of
Jewish plunder. The Czech
Jews are the oldest continuing
Jewish community in Europe.
