Levin Renews Call
For Diverse Community

Washington (JTA) — U.S. Sen.
Carl Levin has renewed his chal-
lenge to the American Jewish
community to broaden its partici-
pation and activities to include
economic and social issues as well
as such "traditionally" Jewish
concerns as Israel, anti-Semitism
and church-state relations.
The Michigan Democrat, in a
keynote address before a confer-
ence of American Jewish Con-
gress leaders in Washington Sun-
day, asserted that broader politi-
cal involvement would provide
the relatively small Jewish com-
munity with the "security" of par-
ticipation in larger coalitions. The
Senator made a similar statement
on Jewish political participation
last fall.
According to Sen. Levin, coali-
tion activity is especially impor-
tant at a time when large pockets
of poverty and unemployment
continue to exist, despite some re-
cent positive economic signs. He
singled out in particular the loss
of many family farms, some of
which had been in the same fam-
ily for generations.
Sen. Levin warned that during
difficult economic times, "desper-
ate people will look for
scapegoats," adding that such
scapegoating can sometimes lead
to anti-Semitism.
A report issued by the AJCon-
gress at the conference under-
scored the importance of the
Jewish community's current
"high level of integration" into

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Interna-
tional Maccabiah Games Com-
mittee approved a resolution at its
closing session last Friday which
calls for the elimination of the
display of national flags from all
future Maccabiah Games. The
flags were a tradition begun in
1932 at the first Maccabiah
Games.
Michael Kevehazi, chairman of
the organizing committee, said,
"We are getting rid of national
flags because they are a symbol of
the separation of Israel and our
people in the Diaspora."
The 1985 games will open July
15 in Ramat Gan. The U.S. team
is expected to have 550 athletes.

the political mainstream, but also
criticized the proliferation of
single-issue, pro-Israel political
action committees.
The report, entitled "The Politi-
cal Future of American Jews,"
claimed that "American Jewish
political effectiveness will depend
not on marginal political clout,
nor on Israel related activism, but
on general Jewish influence in the
political process."
It claims however, that the pre-
ponderance of political action
committees, or PACs, could lead
to a "self-ghettoization" that
would isolate Jews from the
mainstream political process.
