Julius Chajes, composer and conductor of the Center Sym- phony Orchestra, died Feb. 24 at age 74. Born in Poland, Mr. Chajes began studying the piano with his mother at age 6. He composed and performed his first piano recital when he was nine and wrote his first string quartet at age 13. In 1926, at age 15, he performed with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In 1933, he won the honor prize of the city of Vienna for his piano compositions. He moved to pre-state Israel in the 1930s and gained a reputation as one of the foremost composers of modern Israeli music. In 1937, he came to the U.S. and performed on radio for the Columbia Network. He became the director of music at the Jewish Community Center in 1940 and founded its symphony orchestra. Born in Detroit, Mr. Berson attended Northeastern High School and Wayne State Univer- sity. He worked for the Interna- tional News Service and in 1932 joined the now defunct Detroit Times as a sports reporter. He worked there as a copy editor until the paper closed in 1960.
