Are the countries of the
Middle East ready at least to
stop cutting off their noses to
spite their faces? Can the
cause of enlightened self-
interest that brought Egyp-
tians and Jews together in
1925 and led to the Camp
David accords of 1978 now
serve to widen the circle of
peace by including other
states as well?
President Reagan's over-
whelming election victory has
increased the chance of suc-
cess of a renewed American ef-
fort to bring peace to the Mid-
dle East by means of an entente
cordiale among Egypt, Iraq,
Israel, Jordan and Saudi
Arabia. It is to this end that
American policy in the Middle
East must now be directed.

But what . abogt past hat-
reds? And the Palestine prob-
lem? And vows to drive Israel
into the sea?
At least some Arab states
that have based their foreign
policy on the destruction of Is-
rael now appear to have ac-
cepted the existence of the
Jewish state as a fact, whether
or not they like it or acknowl-
edge it publicly. For her part,
Israel is more than willing.
Neither security for its bor-

people can come without a
negotiated settlement with its
neighbors.
Israel's economy is in disar-
ray; Jordan's depends on
handouts. Egypt needs friends
