You can't go wrong at the Lemon
Peel on Hunter with great omelet-
tes for Sunday brunch. Jan
Drake's Garden Cafe on Wood-
ward doesn't serve spirits but the
food is light and well-prepared in
a spring time atmosphere.
"Turning the dining coin over,
eating, which is supposed to be
one of life's purest pleasures, is
right up there with immoral, il-
legal and fattening. When we
were younger, we munched our ,
way through hamburgers, French
fries, pizzas, potato chips and all
manner of junk food with milk
shakes and hot fudge sundaes for
toppers.
"But nowadays, alfalfa sprouts
and brown rice, fish, chicken,
yogurt, vegetables and wheat
germ are the dietary status sym-
bol for the nutrition-minded gen-
eration working out in jogging
suits.
"Dieting can be lethally boring
along with dieters who talk - <
endlessly about the newest menu
which allows them to eat in mod-
eration the foods which made
them fat in the first place.
"You're told to switch to skim
milk, don't butter your toast, try
low fat cottage cheese, use as little
margarine as possible when
sauteing and cut down on oil in
salad dressings. And remember
fruits and vegetables contain high
doses of vitamin C.
"Cutting calories at home is no
major sacrifice. Here's a no-fail
recipe for stuffed cabbage, weight
watcher's style: Mix 1/2 pound of
ground beef, 1/4 teaspoon of light _-
salt, Vs teaspoon of pepper, one
small onion, garlic, one table-
spoon soy sauce and four table-
spoons ice water.
"Cook together 1 1/2 cups of to-
mato juice, one cup whole to-
matoes, 3 /4 cup water,1/4 teaspoon
light salt, teaspoon pepper, 1 /4
teaspoon onion powder, one beef
boullion cube, one teaspoon sugar
substitute, three tablespoons of
wine vinegar. Bring to a boil.
Stuff meat balls in cabbage leaves
and place gently into liquid. Cook
on medium heat about two hours.
If you don't like vinegar, you
can use lemon and keep tasting
for the right combination of sweet
and sour.
"Stir-frying chicken breasts
with lots of vegetables is a good,
satisfying, non-fattening dish.
Use vegetable cooking spray for
stir-frying."
