Center Day Camp
Registration Open
The Jewish Center's summer
day camp programs are currently
taking registration. They include
a variety of camp experiences for
children ages 3 through 15. All
camp programs are located at the
Camp Ruth facilities at the
Maple-Drake site.
Children take an active role in
planning each days' activities. A
special emphasis is placed on
their Jewish heritage. Grouped by
age, children participate in soc-
cer, softball, other outdoor games,
nature, swimming, arts and
crafts, dramatics and a variety of
other organized activities. There
are also special ongoing pro-
grams. Each session culminates
in a Maccabia, which features two
days of team activities.
The Jewish Community Center
Day Camp provides a child care
option for parents of pre-schoolers
who require their children to be in
a full-day program. A half-day
camp program option is available
for pre-school and kindergarten
children only.
Day camp programs are also
available for fifth through tenth
graders. This includes Safari, a
co-ed program for fifth and sixth
graders, which provides day ad-
venture trips to points of interest
in the metropolitan Detroit area.
Activities such as horseback rid-
ing, bowling, a trip to the wave
pool, roller skating and much
more are included in this pro-
gram.
A similar program, called Teen
Caravan, is available for seventh
through tenth graders. Designed
to meet the needs of this older
group, the program models much
of the activities provided in the
Safari program. An extra "attrac-
tion" for the older campers is an
extended three-day trip, the last
week of the camp program.
Camps are also available for
fifth through ninth graders. This
program enables campers to build
their own specialty camp choosing
from one of four morning and one
of three afternoon program
blocks. An advancement of skills
is offered for those who choose to
repeat blocks in the second ses-
sion. This includes tennis, gym-
nastics, performing arts, com-
puters, fine arts, dance and sports.
The summer camp program
utilizes three swimming pools and
additional outdoor facilities do-
nated by Sam and Ruth Rich. A
new addition this year are the
Stuart J. Sachse Athletic Fields.
The program will also be
enhanced by the addition of four
shlichim (Israeli emissaries) who
will be added to the day camp staff
for the summer.
All full day campers are pro-
vided neighborhood-to-bus trans-
portation which is included in the
camp fee.
For details, call the Center day
camp office, 661-1000.
