Yeshiva Band are featured on the rabbi's shows. "I use a religious message that Judaism has a very strong intellectual base," Kagan explains. "A rabbi who talks tradition strictly doesn't have to sound like an anac- hronism. The Torah teachings are eternally relevant." By his own assessment, Ka- gan's show is very much a "soft sell." He explains, "I don't come across preaching at all," but delivers his message through story and narrative. Rabbi Kagan was born in England, which he left at age 18 to pursue religious studies in Israel. He then went to New York and Montreal, where he received Rabbinic Ordination. He came to Detroit in 1966. Many people do not recog- nize distinctions between the Lubavitchers and other Or- thodox Jews. Kagan explains the Lubavitch philosophy as "acknowledging no divisions among Jews as people. We GOING TO THE AIRPORT? We-con- sider Ourselves part of the Torah-observant community but our philosophy is a little different. "Our philosophy differs in our outlook toward non- religious Jews. We carry on the tradition of the Baal Shem Tov (the founder of Chasidism in the 1700s) who really re- vived the intrinsic Jewish teaching that all Jews are the same. There are Jews who ob- serve more than others, but every Jew has the same heart." Kagan feels that the Chasidic community has had a great impact on the Jewish community as a whole. This impact, he believes, has les- sened the differences between Jews. "In the past, the 40s or 50s, the yeshiva educated non- Chasidic Jew would have business dealings with non- religious Jews but would make no attempt to reach out to them religiously," he says. He is proud of his group for several reasons. "Lubavitch brought in outreach to ir- religious Jews," and it is im- portant to him that the Lubavitchers have always been proud to outwardly show that they are Jewish. "Lubavitchers are externally, obviously Jews and we, as Jews, attempt to get the entire Torah observant community to reach out to irreligious Jews." Kagan ,feels the Lubavitch community is a non- prejudiced group. "When I'm together with a totally non- religious friend, I feel nothing
