"I'm not wearing a robe," he
interrupted.
"Fine, you can wear a cape."
"No, I don't want to. Does he
have a sword?"
Garrett was thinking. He
piped in, "Can I be the
Queen?"
"The Queen's a girl, Gar-
rett." At four years old, An-
drew had it figured out and he
wasn't going to let his twin
brother go as a girl. "How
about a He-Man guy?" Garrett
wasn't giving up.
Jordan tried to explain.
"Purim isn't really like Hal-
loween. You can be lots of
things but not really He-Man

guys. There are lots of char-
acters from the Purim story:
Ahasuerus, Mordecai,
townspeople, soldiers, clowns,
guards, the King's dog." (The
King's dog? I decided not to
interrupt.) "You could be
famous people from Jewish
history like Herzl,
Maimonides or Ben-Gurion."
Jordan, the creative seven-
year-old, had already decided.
He would be a hamantaschen.
It was a relatively simple cos-
tume — two poster boards for
the body, a hamantaschen-
shaped hat. He would make up
his face with a poppy seed nose
and red cherry cheeks.
Nothing sounded good to the
twins. They wanted action,
drama, swords and bloodshed.
They were curious about the
Purim story, and remembered
bits and pieces. "Tell us about
the bad queen." "Who was the
bad guy?"
Jordan and I told them the
story while drawing his
hamantaschen. Garrett par-
ticularly liked the ending. "Do
you mean they killed the bad
guy?" He had made up his
mind. "I'm going to be Ha-
man."
He disappeared downstairs
and reappeared as Haman,
wearing his Superman cape,
snow boots and a crooked
black magic marker mus-
tache. Striking an evil pose, he
told us, "I'm going to kill all
the Jews!"
I became slightly upset.
"Garrett, that's an awful thing
to say." "Don't worry Mom.
There's no Jews around here."
Haman will not be part of
our costume selection this
year. At least not until our
four-year-olds understand
how they relate to Purim. •i
