KOHN Special to The Jewish News A million dollar reward and new details on the Nazi fugitive highlighted a week of Senate hearings. No one is willing to speculate on how close we are to bringing Dr. Josef Mengele, the "Angel of Death" of Au- schwitz, to justice, but the pressure is mounting to find him. This week, the Simon Wiesenthal Center posted a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture and extradition of Mengele. Further, two U.S. Senators brought to light docu- ments indicating that the CIA had been monitoring the movements of the infamous death camp doctor for at least 13 years and had done nothing with the information. In a press conference on Tuesday, held in a Senate hearing room, New York's Sen. Alfonse M. D'Amato and Pennsylvania's Sen. Arlen Specter re- vealed 11 CIA reports and memos de- tailing: Mengele's involvement in illegal drug traffic; His „ability to move with relative freedom and under his own identity in Pressure mounts in search for Mengele. Both Senators criticized the CIA and other U.S. government agencies for not following up on information concerning Mengele's whereabouts. Sen. D'Amato charged that agencies of the United States, as well asother na- tions, had exhibited a lack of initia- tive, intent and coordination in an "in- vestigation that has languished for almost 40 years." Sen. Specter said that the CIA "had not been diligent" investigating the Mengele case and urged correction of the situation. The United States, he said, has wanted to sweep the unsav- ory subject of Mengele under the rug, and charged that the "acts of omission" by various government agencies "con- stitute protection" of the fugitive. Specter and D'Amato have written a letter to Secretary of State George Shultz, apprising him formally of the Continued on Page 28 Purim With A Twist MARCH 1, 1985 CLOSE-UP CORPORATE MATCHMAKER A new organization promotes business ties between Detroit and Israel Story On Page 40 Shelly Jackier Israel Will Wait, See On Peace Moves BY ELLYCE FIELD Special to The Jewish News It started routinely enough.
