She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. She is the recipient of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture Fellowship and was cited by the Columbia Uni- versity Council for Research in the Social Sciences and New York Council for the Humanities. She is the author of numerous articles and a book, The 'Jews in Vichy France, and an upcoming book on the Jewish family. The Midrasha in cooperation with Cong. Beth Achim, will sponsor a special slide lecture with Prof. Joseph Gutmann at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Beth Achim. . Dr. Gutmann is professor of art history at Wayne State Univer- sity and adjunct curator at the De- troit Institute of Arts. He has contributed 150 articles to leading scholarly journals. A few of his published works in- clude: The Dura-Europos Synagogue: A Re-Evaluation; The Synagogue: Studies in Origins, Archaeology and Architecture; The Image and the World: Con- frontation in Judaism, Chris- tianity and Islam. Midrasha College For Teachers The Midrasha, will institute a new program in teacher certifica- tion during the spring semester. The two year program will focus on both theoretical and practical concerns of the Jewish educator. Those involved in the program will receive credits for working in an educational setting under pro- fessional supervision. Some of the courses that will be offered in- clude: Philosophy of Education, Curriculum Construction, Educa- tional Psychology, Child De- velopment, Issues in Jewish Edu- cation, Methods and Models of Teaching Hebrew, Bible and So- cial Studies and Research Tech- niques. Tuition scholarships will be provided for those currently in- volved in the United Hebrew Schools' system. The first course to be offered be- ginning March 14 is "Philosophy of Education" with Dr. Gerald Teller, superintendent of the UHS. For information, call the Midrasha, 352-7117. Dr. Gutmann is the recipient of the 1980 Wayne State University Board of Governor's Faculty Recognition Award for outstand- ing accomplishment and the Henry Morgenthau Fellowship to study archeolgy at Hebrew Uni- versity in Jerusalem. The lecture is entitled "Images and Insights" and is a prelude to the Precious Legacy exhibit, Judaic Treasures. from the Czechoslovak State Collection to be exhibited at the Detroit Insti- tute of Arts in March and April. Midrasha To Host Adviser Series The Midrasha, in cooperation with the Greater Detroit United Synagogue Youth, will co-sponsor a special adviser's enrichment series to be held on Tuesday and March 5 and 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the main United Hebrew Schools building. The goal of the series is to help advisors respond more effectively to problems that they encounter in their group work. The following sessions are slated for the series: "The Single Parent Family" with Brenda Be- ron, psychotherapist, Regional Mental Health Clinic; "Funda- mentals of Conservative Judaism" with Rabbi Paul Freedman, director of the de- partment of youth activities, United Synagogue of America; "Group Dynamics" with Dr. Sheila Feigelson, educational consultant and "Substance Abuse" with Charlie Silow, psychotherapist at Counseling Associates. This program is open to USY and Kadmia advisers. Subsidies will be provided.
