Call 354-6060 Forty centuries of history are watching you today. The far-off generations look to you out of the twilight of the past. The warriors and prophets and teachers of ancient- Judaea are watching you. The martyrs of Spain and Poland and Russia, they who died that our people might live, are watching you. The young heroes who fell on a hundred fields in the great war are watching you. The victims of a hundred pogroms, men and women and children, are watching you. In the eyes of all of them there is a single question: • "Will the land of our Fathers be restored to our people or have we lived and died in vain?" Application of this expressive appeal to the present needs is cer- tainly rational. It retains an his- toric message. It has a lesson for the generations. It brings to light again the genius of a great writer who was among the most eminent Jewish libertarians and Zionists. Unmatched in passion, filled with so much feeling and appeals to justice, there is very little to match the genius of Maurice Samuel in this deeply-moving ad- dress to the Jewish people to act in its own behalf. Therefore, the recapitulation in the appeals of the past, applying them to the present. They prove that repetition can be valuable. Reviving the pioneering appeals -- „ v•;;;:: to justice can be creative and hopefully will bring proper re- sults. Endorsers in 1931 It is interesting to recall those listed as endorsers of the 1931 Al- lied Jewish Campaign, referred to in the reproduced headline. They were, among others, Governor Wilbur M. Bricker, Mayor Frank Murphy, Superintendent of Schools Frank Cody and many others. Of interest also is the manner in which the Campaign was con- ducted here at the time. Commo- dore Aaron Deroy was the 1931 Campaign chairman. Mrs. Henry Wineman headed a newly organized women's division of the drive _ . Walker Outdoor Advertising Co. donated five street billboards to the Campaign. It apparently was necessary to have speaker volunteers to Israel Himelhoch bring the Allied Jewish Cam- paign message to Detroit Jewry. Therefore, Speakers Bureau Bulletins were issued periodi- cally. The committee recorded on these b _ ulletins in that year con- sisted of: Louis S. Cogane, chair- man; Dr. Alvin D. Hersch and Nathaniel H. Goldstick, associate chairmen; Mrs. Philip H. Broudo, secretary. What the bulletins did not state was that they were prepared by a public relations committee of which Israel Himelhoch was chairman and it included Jake Albert, Clifford Epstein, Philip Adler and this commentator. There is also the cry for help from the politically, socially and economically oppressed European Jewries. There are a score or more American Jewish causes minis- tering to the spiritual, physical and social wants of our people. And there is included in the drive the appeal for Palestine. In the cause of this, the greatest ro- mance of modern times, is enlisted the pioneering spirit of the ancient Jewish people, and only men "with souls so dead" that every bit of romance and idealism has died in their hearts can possi- bly turn a deaf ear to the work for the upbuilding of the Jewish na- tional hearth. Perhaps emphasis will be lent to the appeal for Palestine by quoting Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president of He- brew Union College of Cincinnati and leader among the non- Zionists of this country, who stated last week: "Palestine today, in its larger aspect, has ceased to be a Zionist question. It has become an all Jewish question. As a loyal' Jew, and feeling at one with my Jewish brethern all over the world, and without reducing by one penny my support of all other worthy movements, I am, this year, giv- ing more than ever before to the cause of Palestine. I do this out of strong conviction; and I challenge all my fellow Jews, Zionists and anti-Zionists, to do the same."
