BEST OF EVERYTHING

DANNY RASKIN

UNTIL THE "Big Fire of 1968"
. . . that destroyed Darbys on W.
Seven Mile Rd., it had been one of
the northwest's most popular eat-
ery spots . . . an elegant triple-
threat restaurant where so many
people dined, drank, got together
. . . and always knew where to
meet after attending affairs.
Now comes another place with
the same name . . . except for an
apostrophe between the y and s
. . . It has been opened in Utica,
45199 Cass Ave., one block north
of M-59 and one block east of Van
Dyke . . . by Mary Beth Darby and
Manager Tom Peters . . . They've
taken over the former historic red
house (Country Inn) that folks
used to travel to from all over for
ribs . . . and are serving creative
American cuisine . . . escargots,
smoke trout and chicken pato
among the appetizers . . . imag-
inative pastas, entrees like Veal
Moutarde (noisettes of veal ten-
derloin sauteed and finished with
brandy, cream and pommery
mustard), Cajun shrimp, sauteed
brook trout, breast of chicken au
poivre, roast duckling, and many
others.
It is interesting that another
Darby's has arisen . . . even if only
similarity at present is that apos-
trophe between the y and s.
Who knows . . . the words,
"Let's go to Darby's" may soon be
heard again . . . After all, Utica
isn't that far away . . . People used
to travel further going to the orig-
inal Darbys.
NO MORE TINE HILLS Res-
taurant . . . on Orchard Lake Rd.
between 12 and 13 Mile . . . Own-
ers of former Honey Tree site,
Tom Goulas and Connie
Efstathiou, are back operating
their 185-seater place as before
. . . Tally Hall locale site remains.
A FIRST AT RECENT Hill-
crest Banquet & Convention Cen-
ter by Michigan Chefs de Cuisine
was becoming acquainted with
the secrets of kosher foods .. .
Paul Kohn of Quality Kosher
Caterers has been invited to re-
turn after his most informative
talk on "The -Art of Kosher
Cuisine."
One of the questions asked was
whether surf and turf can be
served kosher . . . and the answer
was surprising . . . Yes, said Paul,
if meat and fish are not on the
same plate . . . since fish and meat
are not traditionally eaten to-
gether, according to him . . . They
-can be eaten in succession, says
Paul, but not combined.
Paul, by the way, has already
lost 35 pounds on his own con-
ceived diet.
NEW HIT COMEDY movie
Beverly Hills Cop is not only
bringing in audiences, money and
acclaim for its stars and pro-
ducers, but also resulting in an
onslaught of extra work for a
Kansas-based manufacturer of
custom-imprinted sports and
casualwear.
Artex Manufacturing Co. of
Overland Park, announced the
acquired rights as sole, worldwide
distributors of sportswear with
the phrase, "Mumford Phys. Ed.
Dept." . . . printed on a faded
T-shirt worn by star Eddie Mur-
phy throughout much of the
movie.

Agreement was reached with
localites Sheldon Kay, son of Sid-
ney and Sarah Kay . . . and David
Haron, son of Percy- and Bess
Haron . . . They are licensing
agents for the Detroit Public
Schools and Samuel C. Mumford
High School, owners of the
copyrighted logo . . . A royalty
from the sale of each shirt and
other imprinted apparel will be
paid to Mumford.
Jerry Bruckheimer, a 1961
graduate of Mumford High, is
producer of the movie, Beverly
Hills Cop . . . Sheldon attended
Southfield High and Dave went to
Mumford . . . As a result of their
efforts the student activities di-
rector at Mumford, Queen
Loundmon, has appeared on Good
Morning America where she pre-
sented a Mumford T-shirt to Joan
London and her husband, Michael
Kraus, a former resident of De-
troit, and 1957 Mumford High
graduate . . . and David Hartman
. .. CBS News recently inter-
viewed Sheldon and Jerry and
discussed the shirts on national
TV . . . as has CNN cable news,
Entertainment Tonight and radio
and TV stations around the coun-
try.
The sales of authorized "Mum-
ford Phys. Ed. Dept." T-shirts are
increasing daily and have reached
over 100,000 nationally with no
end in sight . . . Orders and reor-
ders are coming from virtually all
major and local department and
specialty stores.
As a result of the interest,
graduates from most of Mum-
ford's graduating classes since the
first in 1952 have returned to the
school or sent in letters request-
ing shirts . . . Plans are in the
works for a Mumford Alumni
Association and an All-Years Re-
union (1952 thru 1985) . . . Dave
hopes grads will contact him
(355-3344) with their ideas in this
area . . . so that further plans can
be _developed.
Sheldon and Dave arranged for
royaltieslo go to all Detroit Public
Schools, but Mumford High,
which is selling about 1,000 shirts
a day, can keep this money for
themselves . . . Artex manufac-
tures shirts for all major sports
teams, networks, schools, etc. . . .
It will distribute the T-shirt
worldwide with the original logo
and burgundy and blue colors as
well as in other colors . . . The
company also will market other
children's and adults' sportswear
with the "Mumford Phys. Ed.
Dept." logo . . . It will not limit
itself to T-shirts or to the T-shirt
colors shown in the movie .. .
Bulk of the orders are for th6
original-colored shirt, however
. . . from all over the country.
Plus realizing profits from their
own sales, Mumford will also
share in the Detroit Public
School's bounty . . . As of two
weeks ago, it had realized 'more
than $20,000 in profits from one
month sale of "Mumford Phys. Ed.
Dept." T-shirts.
And it all started when Mum-
ford High graduate producer of
Beverly Hills Cop, Jerry Bruc-
kheimer, simply asked for a shirt
from the school for authenticity.
Dave and Sheldon are both local
attorneys . . . and caution the pub-
